Lightning McStitch replied to the topic what fabrics do you use for a lining? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 5 years ago
@dorilloyd if I’m lining something then odds are it’s a special occasion dress that will need some ironing anyway. So ironing the lining is not a deal breaker. I have made many Fairy Tale dresses with cotton voile/Batiste lining and the bodice can all be ironed as one and just the lining and main skirts ironed separately. It’s not that much extra…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Choosing the right size in the forum liesl + co: classic shirt 5 years ago
Oof, so many questions! So it sounds like you don’t need your first set of questions answered since you’ve already decided on a size. To answer your question about length, be sure to compare front and back from the bottom of the armhole since the yoke wraps around to the front by a bit. If you’ve shortened front and back by the same amount you…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Classic shirt collar in the forum liesl + co: recital shirt 5 years ago
I just use my ordinary straight stitch foot for those seams. I just checked the post, and I think you’re referring to the edgestitching foot? I mentioned in the post that you can use it if you have trouble with straight stitching. With a little practice you really don’t need it, but it can be handy.

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Alteration to Butterick B6386 sewing pattern in the forum Sewing for Yourself 5 years ago
Ok, you’re looking for more like a funnel neck. You could measure the neck and cut a tube/rectangle to be the same length as the neckline. That’s where I’d start.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean. Does our Liesl + Co Neighborhood Hoodie help?

Yes, the two shirt collars are interchangeable, so that will work just fine! Can’t wait to see how yours turns out!

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Back pleat? in the forum liesl + co: gelato blouse + dress 5 years ago
You could definitely do that. Do you have the Gallery Dress pattern? I imagine it working much like that. Cut the back with extra at the centre back fold line, then create a box pleat with a rectangle about 1&1/2″ deep at the neck line.

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic How to prevent top of dress bodice from curling forward in the forum off topic 5 years ago
It sounds to me like your machine tension might not be even or the fabric is somehow getting pulled tight as you sew it. If the outer fabric is getting pulled, or if it’s being push along with the presser foot as you sew, that would result in a curling edge. Maybe try reducing the amount of pressure your presser foot is putting on your fabric (if…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic breezy blouse armscye bias band in the forum liesl + co: breezy blouse 5 years ago
Hmmm. Are you measuring along the seam line? I’m measuring the armhole vs the binding in the software and all the sizes are exactly the same length as the bias, so I’m not sure why you’re having this problem.

Can you check your pattern pieces again? I’m lining them up perfectly (see attached image), so I’m not understanding how you’re having this problem.

I have one that I’ll post as soon as I find time. I usually sew a 6 or 8 and went up to a 12 for oversized, and it went really well! Promise to post soon.

The dress on the pattern cover is a Japanese linen rayon. The peplum blouse is an embroidered double gauze.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic is there a sleeve that fits well on the birthday party dress? in the forum oliver + s: birthday party 5 years ago
When a pattern is drafted to be sleeveless, the shoulder will be narrowerer and the armhole more inward, so just attaching a sleeve won’t work so well.
But, it’s easy. Trace the Birthday party dress in the size you want then lay the bodice tracings over another pattern and redraw the shoulder/armhole area. Now you have the “pattern X” armhole in…[Read more]

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Sway back adjustment in the forum liesl + co: bistro dress 5 years ago
Do you have the Fit for Real People book? There are quite a few pages dedicated to sway back in the book. To be honest, I usually just pin the back curve more: darts, side seam, back seam, whatever it takes to get a nice shape. My sway back is pretty extreme, and I don’t always fit everything to entirely because it’s so pronounced. I feel like my…[Read more]
