  • @nancyh, that makes sense! Thanks!
Finished the pants – no problems with construction, and the pockets are just what I wanted:

  • I haven’t finished pant construction yet (I still have to attach the waistband), but so far, splitting the pants piece at the notch on the waist edge seems to have worked, and the Art Museum pockets went in with only a little futzing.

  • Hi, Liesl – I mean pockets that use the outside of the pants as the outer layer and have a pocket bag? The kind that aren’t patch pockets? Sorry – I’m not sure of the correct terminology, clearly!

It’s not the pocket construction itself that worries me (I’ve drafted new pocket shapes before), it’s where to divide the one-piece Sleepover pant…[Read more]

  • I’ve added patch pockets to the Sleepover pants once, but I’d really prefer in-line pockets this go-round (matching Dad/son PJs for Father’s Day). I’m planning to use the Art Museum pockets and am inclined to split the pants at the existing pattern notch. Or should I split the pattern closer to the pants front instead? Since the whole waistband is…[Read more]

  • Hi, all – I’ve been on the lookout for very fine (lightweight? thin in the vertical direction) twill tape, and all of the twill tape in the 5/4/17 blog post got me thinking that I should ask a collection of people who are likely to know that sort of thing. I mostly want this for adding homemade labels to garments, so off-white or white is fine,…[Read more]

  • I think you’d probably be just fine to skip the interfacing (except for the brim, where called for in the pattern) – it will change the feel of the hat, but for a baby I think softer/floppier will be just fine. I’ve made maybe 10 of these hats, all in quilting cottons but of various weights, and with whatever interfacing I have on hand (from very…[Read more]

  • I think the smallest size of these that I’ve made has been the 18-24 mo size, but I can definitely confirm what Todd mentioned above – I made a pair for a costume in some cheap, thin jersey with minimal stretch and they were like sausage casings compared to the same-size pairs I’d made out of nice interlock for PJs.

  • I learned about Rose City Textiles via this site, and have always been impressed with their stock of outdoor apparel fabric. I was browsing on there today and saw a note about the shop closing. The website is still up, so I’m assuming they’re still taking orders, but I don’t know for how long.

  • I made a pair of these out of supplex – nylon fabric that many RTW hiking pants are made of. I ordered from Rockywoods fabric, but you might also look at Rose City Textiles (they have more choices). That’s a very specific type of RTW look that may or may not be to an 11-year-olds taste, but both stores do sell swatches. And I found the supplex…[Read more]

  • I haven’t made this dress, but I have adjusted a couple of patterns for my son when the weight and height didn’t line up for a single size (although he tends to go in the other direction – he’s got short legs). What I’ve done is to trace the width for one size and the height for another, connecting the lines where necessary. I’ve read on here that…[Read more]

  • I should have added more length! Apparently my older niece’s blouse *just* fits, length-wise, but both were well-received.

  • I do a lot of upcycling. I try to rip seams when possible, but if I know I’ll have enough fabric (if I’m turning my husband’s pants into my toddler’s pants, for instance), I’ll often just cut right next to the seams instead of ripping a faux-flat fell + serged edge. I try to match up pants pattern pieces with the corresponding part of the real…[Read more]

  • Hey, so I *finally* made these! In general, I loved sewing these up – really a pleasurable pattern to sew. I have to say, though, that while I made the thread chains, I ended up cutting them off and just adding a small hook/eye closure at the top of the keyhole. I didn’t care for the look of the thread chain (I’m sure that improves with practice),…[Read more]

Just to be clear, you’re saying I can squeeze the City Stroll skirt, not the Everyday skirt, right? I’ll give it some thought – I’m not a big skirt wearer, and I like the look of the Everyday skirt a little better, but then that’s the beauty of buying remnants – I’m not risking much!

    Thanks, everybody!

I *just* made him a black sketchbook shirt, but it’s short-sleeved. So I might see if I can fit a long-sleeved one. I was thinking pants, and I’ve been meaning to sew the Art Museum trousers anyway, so that’s the way I’m leaning.
@lightningmcstitch, @liesl – hah! Thanks! If I could get an Everyday skirt out of it, I probably…[Read more]

  • Since I mostly sew for my 2 year old son, I buy a lot of remnants, often without a purpose in mind. I picked up a full yard (54″ width) of 100% linen – relatively heavyweight, and black. Any suggestions about what to do with it, either for him or for me?

I have separately made the FT Raglan into both a zip-up front jacket and a pullover hoodie (using the hood from the School Days jacket) – I think it would probably be fairly straightforward to do them both together.
