Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Cotton/nylon blend fabric? in the forum off topic 8 years ago
Thanks for reminding me of Ashley’s fabric sourcing tips. A pair of cargo shorts in that kind of nylon blend is exactly what my husband would want me to sew for him (getting my threads crossed)

This denim it just will not stretch
When I wear it I feel I must retch
So tight ’round my guts -

I’m calling for clarification on that one @todd …
“wretch” (noun) a poor, miserable person.
“retch” (verb) to gag or vomit
“wrench” (verb) to twist and pull
I’m guessing, from context, you were going for wrench… Poetic license bring what it is, and this being a limerick thread on a sewing forum, you can make up any word/meaning you like of…[Read more] -

Yay! The suits look great. I love the boning and all the “grown up” lady aspects of this pattern. I’ll miss the sewalong deadline but I’m right behind you, just six months behind… 🙂

@justsewit I have always gone in person yo the Melbourne store. There are stores in Wellington (NZ), Sydney & Melbourne (Aus) and Los Angeles (U.S.A.)
I guess they’d ship from whichever had stock and was closest to you.
Now that it has turned cold I want a wardrobe full of merino fleece long sleeved tees! -

There is rumoured to be a new book
The cover, it has a good look
But I just can’t decide
If I step up or hide
Perhaps a challenge to be undertook(I know, bad past tense 🙂 )
I can’t decide which is my size

I’m wearing a merino fleece Metro T right now! Have a look at http://www.thefabricstore.com.au the have an L.A. store so US shipping should be reasonable.
There’s an amazing outdoor fabric supplier in the UK that I’ve purchased from, and I keep finding one in Canada when I’m searching online, but I forget the name…. -

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Lengthen culottes in the forum oliver + s: lunch box tee + culottes 8 years ago
The culottes have a very dropped crotch, so this is one pattern where you’d probably get away with not making changes.
However, beware making such big size changes as you’ll lose the proportions of the pattern and could end up with something quite odd.
Perhaps you could make the 2T with size 4 leg length.
You could run a tape measure from front…[Read more] -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Faux Fly Basting Stitches. Removed or not? in the forum oliver + s: field trip 8 years ago
Replying to my own question… I’ve made these pants quite a few times now and I remove the basting stitches. The slight “openness” makes it look more like a functional fly.
I’m in the “remove them” camp. -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Finishing knits in the forum oliver + s: school bus t-shirt 8 years ago
@eboyd83 Emily a serger and an overlocker are the same thing, just US vs Aus/English terminology.
A coverstitch is the separate function which looks like straight stitching on top and serging/overlocking underneath. A coverstitch can be a stand alone machine or a combo serger/coverstitch. -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Finishing knits in the forum oliver + s: school bus t-shirt 8 years ago
Not to blow my own horn, but have you looked in the tutorials section of the Oliver + S blog? With just a bit of tinkering and practice, you can get a great, professional looking, and nearly unbustable hem using a twin needle.
A simple zig zag stitch will work well too, and if your thread colour matches well is not that bad to look at. -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic FBA for Maritime — how important? in the forum liesl + co: maritime knit top 8 years ago
@cat75 I’ll preface my response by saying I have no bust so haven’t done so myself, but I suspect you should.
It’s a top with a moderately wide neckline and a dropped shoulder. If you go with your full bust size you might find the whole thing too saggy sack like.
With a decent high/full bust difference if you fit to your high bust/shoulder it may…[Read more] -

You could definitely interface one or both ear pieces to make them stiffer. Go for it.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic what's the most difficult thing you've ever sewn? in the forum off topic 8 years ago
I recently swore like a sailor while seeing a hoodie for the kid. The hood and shoulder were one pattern piece and required a ninety degree pivot at one point. Yet there were no pattern markings at all and determining where that pivot point was, and getting it all to work without puckers was very trying indeed.
Not s hard thing to do if the…[Read more] - Load More
