Ok, I went back on my word and cut an apple picking dress anyway. I decided on the pink check winter twill for it – no one will believe me if I say “it” decided it had to be chosen! Anyway, I am looking forward to finishing it as I belive the fabric choice was perfect – screams classic little girl dress! I have only made this dress once before and…[Read more]

On doing some simple construction and getting a little sewing time in, I got started on a tiny apple picking dress. The big problem is that I keep for some unknown reason sewing the skinny placket backwards so the folded edge is the wrong way! I have two skinny plackets, both backward!

Nicole replied to the topic Shorten/lengthen line on Gallery tunic in the forum liesl + co: gallery tunic + dress 9 years ago
On other patterns, I sort of eye ball it and see where it works best (i.e. won’t alter the shape too much).
I would love to know if there is a rule of thumb. The last few vintage patterns I have sewn tell you to ‘lengthen above this line’.

Quick question, do we add/subtract length below, above, or on both sides of the line? Possibly I’m staring right at the answer and just not seeing it — thanks for any help!

I don’t have a pattern number for you but I have had success making casual pull on trousers from pj’s bottoms patterns.
You will need to add pockets and there looks to be a boot leg type thing going on, so maybe a teen style range? -

Hm, maybe a BHA tutorial is in order for those needing to make big head adjustments! Any volunteers to write one? Meleliza, your last guest post was so detailed and useful, want to tackle this?
Over thirty thousand happy photos in the flickr group, so it seems the brand as a whole is not designed for unusually small heads.

Well, what I wound up doing was putting it on and re-marking the apex. This time only about 8 inches from the side seam, and sewed from there to the same spot where the ‘legs’ of the dart ended before. Hopefully it looks a bit better. I’ll put up a pic as soon as I can get flickr working again!

Sorry to but in…. I was watching a movie last night ( The General’s Daughter) and the main actress (Madeline Stow)? was wearing a lovely sleeveless blouse which had an armhole facing, stitched down.
I thought of your question. -

Ellen, if it bugs you, fix it. I have embraced my quick unpick (it helps that is is a natty little number I purchased in the O+S store).
I just accept it as part of good sewing now.
Much less angst. 🙂 -

I love that sweet chubbiness they still have when they start kind. All gone by big school.

Thanks for heads up Sarvi, that is not a good look.
How does it fit if you shorten the dart? Less taper? -

Hallo Tiina, I am so glad you joined. I have girls too (well, one boy) and I have started pulling out O+S clothes I made for older siblings, for the younger ones. I love that!
What patterns do you sew for your husband?

Hi gals,
I’ve made a 3/4″ FBA on a size 8 Gallery tunic, in semi sheer white fabric. I feel as though the bust darts are a bit too long, or something. Feels a bit like two paper airplanes pointing at my nipples! Not quite the look I had in mind. Could I make them shorter? Would I make them wider to compensate?
