  • Hi Katy, welcome!

It is a little while since I made a Sailboat top but I found the fit spot on for my little one but I know I had to add length to the sleeve the older sizes. Maybe it is designed to be shorter?

I am in camp ‘one size up’ for a new pattern, with the theory being it will eventually fit.
I will also come onto the forum and ask…[Read more]

  • Good luck Ellen.
Do you have access to an older machine? Many modern machines dislike bulk but older work horses will often chug through anything.
Alternatively, leave that button hole off, sew a faux button where it should be and sew a popper on the inside. I do find this blouse does benefit from a sew in popper just under the edge anyway.

Those quilts were just beautiful Fiona! But I must say any storms happening in and around your area would certainly be sewing ones!

We have our fabric for this “ball” dress and now we have to figure out how to print the so called printable pattern – simplicity. Then maybe I can get started on a muslin.

They don’t give us much time, just two…[Read more]

  • It’s now on my list to grade up the skirt and release it in larger sizes! I can totally understand why you like it, and it would be great for the older girls too, I agree. I have a very large project on my plate right now, but I’ll try to squeeze it in when I can find time, ok?

Wool is a wonderful fabric and a lot sturdier the you would imagine
Thank you Brenda, you have made Jed’s evening

  • I loved Bunheads but did they do a second season? Or was it just a very long first series?

I have teenage girls that earn their own money, it is so hard to encourage them to shop ethically.

The really annoying thing is, the cheap and cheerful clothing they buy is shocking quality and I have to wash it separately and carefully press it back into shape.

Maria, I have been admiring your lovely sewing, a very big welcome to you.

@LightningMcstitch, as my son says, everything is science.

  • I get all my laundry tips via my husband who passes them on from a mate who’s an industrial chemist. You never know when that kind of knowledge will be handy!
    Nice to see you here.

I agree as to the vote with your dollar. It pains me to shop for clothes – my kid likes to wear super simple little tanks – they sell them at Target for $5. I really hate to buy them, but I do. Those tanks, and underwear and socks are pretty much the only “new” items I personally buy her. I’m trying to buy her shoes made in the US or Europe at…[Read more]

  • I have to endure big bang theory alot! Murray claims it helps him to sleep! I want to kick the tv out the door because it keeps me awake!

Another program I liked was Once upon a time. It was a nice twist on the use of fairy tale characters.

And Maleficent, even though rated M, I let my kids watch it because it was such a great story. Of course I…[Read more]

I find this really challenging. Not just because it is hard to find stuff that one might personally deem as ethical, but because what is ethical?

Ethical as a labor practice means definitely European, US, or UK (former UK) manufacturing.

But ethical in environmental practices? Is organic ethical? I’ve read somewhere that the water usage of…[Read more]

  • We have foxtel which, when I get the chance gives me the opportunity to watch Outlander (can’t wait for the new series), Grimm (hubby loves this one), Our Zoo, Call the Midwife and lately, Frankie. I am excited about the new Hart of Dixie series starting Thursday.

At the moment it is an episode of The block triple threat and then Big bang theory,…[Read more]

Ellen the music class blouse was one of the first patterns I used. It was and continues to be a favourite. In fact I have just purchased some Liberty earmarked for a long sleeved version but I have the other things mentioned above to tackle first. I tried making one with bound seams and my machine refused to do some of the buttonholes because it…[Read more]

  • Haha! No, I meant I lack the skill to do French seams as well as you do! But I couldn’t resist mentioning your other favorite topic, hehe.
