I lined a Secret Agent trench very successfully and it had a lot more wear then the unlined versions.
I touch on it in this post http://fiveandcounting-motherof5.blogspot.com.au/2013/03/elsas-turn-again-lining-unlined-blazer.html
It is not a ‘proper’ method, but it worked well and the jacket has been handed down and still getting a lot of…[Read more]

  • Honestly, I’d make a skirt with it rather than a top, and 1 yd is heaps for a skirt. The Everyday skirt would look great, and I have used velvet to make several MIP A+ skirts. (I love wearing them – but have to stop myself stroking the fabric in public!)

Lurve that Knight Hoodie, Hugo wants one!

I look forward to your reveal Shelley.

I finished up the knit Music Class blouse and Lunch Box culottes for Liddy, for a sneaky school uniform. She is very pleased and gave the culottes two thumbs up.

Next up, Hugo’s turn as the Twins doubled up last time. The Thread Theory Pea Coat in charcoal…[Read more]

Hi Renee, pleased to ‘meet’ you!
    🙂

I completely agree about the lack of stylish little girls clothing in the RTW market. I am have a blast dressing my littlest two girls (the older ones are nice too but the little ones still wear whatever I like).

I also agree that the patterns are failsafe, which is so nice when we are all far too busy to…[Read more]

I’m always ogling the great double sided knits. Solid on one side and stripes on the other. I like the idea of making hoodies for the kids, so the inner hood, pocket welts etc can be the reverse side.
I’ve just bought an amazing Italian double faced wool that will be a cape for my mum. The reverse side will be visible where it falls open a bit at…[Read more]

  • In my experience of growing children (n=2) they don’t get wider from the age you’re talking about, just taller.
If you want the dress to fit nicely on her birthday then make the smaller size with maybe an extra inch of skirt length.
But, the slightly bigger size will undoubtedly look beautiful. I’m sure we’re not talking sack size, right.
    If your…[Read more]

You *can* absolutely, but it can be a little rougher in texture so if your child has sensory issues, perhaps check that first?

Check your width too, make sure it is not too narrow or it is just horrid to attach.

You are right Lucy, it is a lot quicker. 🙂

  • I am with Heidi on this one. This is a dress that will look okay a bit big, particularly if you have a bow to cinch it in at the waist, it also looks very pretty swinging a little free.

You sound as if you really want to make it? So make it in the 2T and it will fit, at some point. You can always add a largish hem too.

    🙂

  • I wonder if it’s more of a shape issue than a size issue — would leaving the darts unsewn on the 18-24 leave enough belly room while still fitting nicely around the shoulders? I don’t recall whether the 18m size has the waist darts? Unfortunately it’s hard to predict how much a kid that age will grow in four months, but I can understand wanting…[Read more]

  • I would say that you wouldn’t actually fold the fabric as per you would ordinarily to get the result because the tucks moght end up a bit off. Would trace the pattern on the fold but not cut it on the fold in order to get the full piece and then work from there to determine where to put my tucks.

This is just how I would do it.

    • Hey Nicole, didn’t I see your layette in grey as well? Great neutral choice.

  • Have fun with the coat Heidi. It’s such a lovely pattern. Many little steps leading to a summit of awesomeness!
What have I been up to? Well, I can’t make a Fairy Tale dress without imagining another, so I’ve just cut a second. This one will be simple, no collar, no sleeves, and a pleated skirt.
This week I sewed another Knight Hoodie. This time…[Read more]

  • Well thanks to @georgeandizzy ‘s blog post and a Facebook promotional coupon, last night I found myself buying the Puppet Show pattern ;-). My girls fall in separate size ranges but since Olivia has all of Ellie’s old things to grow into, I only got the larger size. Once I finish my Easter sewing (Library Dresses for the girls and a Bistro dress…[Read more]

    • Yaaay! It’s a fab pattern, glad I could twist someone’s arm in to trying it, haha;)

  • Great plan, @meleliza ! I know what you mean about upcycling adult clothes. You’d think there was ample yardage but the seams hit in funny places, and often unpicking the seams is so much trouble for so little usable fabric that it makes more sense to just trim them off. I do have a nice little pile of pretty buttons robbed from old Banana…[Read more]

I understand! Still it is no excuse to not enjoy the experience. You would make overseas friends and set up networks that would probably allow them to visit you in Australia. And we all know there really is no place like home.

You are actually giving your girls a wonderful experience – I lived overseas as a child for a year and still draw from…[Read more]
