Nicole replied to the topic Finishing knits in the forum oliver + s: school bus t-shirt 10 years ago
Hi @eboyd83.
The main thing, with hemming knits, is keeping enough ease and stretch so that the hem doesn’t ‘pop’ when being worn or put on and off.
I have a cover-stitch machine (which is great when it works). Before that, I used to neaten the raw edge with a zig zag, turn press and then stitch with a large stitch (3.5) stretching in the fabric…[Read more]

I just made myself a Deer and Doe Plantain tee in navy cotton/modal with (much to my daughters horror) silver sleeve patches.
I love it, although sewing modal is a slippery business.
@Liesl I was lucky that is was sized for him so I didn’t have to fit at all. I enjoyed it but I am ready to move on to some quicker projects.
I can’t wait to see…[Read more]

I finished my sons blazer, finally. It was a big sew. I now know why Liesl is not keen to make a kiddy size pattern…
Next, jeans for me!

Nicole replied to the topic sugestions for sewing machines in the forum off topic 10 years ago
@rebecca, it is much faster then a household machine and far more powerful.
It will sew a buttonhole on anything, even canvas (I am talking about tarp canvas). It has a range of stitches, just like a domestic one.
I adore it.

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 10 years agoTamara, thankfully in 2nd grade they only compare how well their dresses spin! 😀
I do remember for my own first communion in Catholic school we had a uniform — a very sweet empire-waist puff sleeve affair in voile.
How old is your girl for confirmation — is it 7th or 8th grade? At that time (even more so than others) they grow like weeds and…[Read more] -

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 10 years agoso the angst with regard to a magnum opus was not unfounded, but i am overall pleased with the result. I drafted a princess-seamed full circle skirt with long sleeves.
Silk dupioni lined in cotton voile, with embroidered organza sleeves and veil. I bought silk organza and was going to do the embroidery myself, but chanced upon some leftover from…[Read more] -

@cat75 I’ll preface my response by saying I have no bust so haven’t done so myself, but I suspect you should.
It’s a top with a moderately wide neckline and a dropped shoulder. If you go with your full bust size you might find the whole thing too saggy sack like.
With a decent high/full bust difference if you fit to your high bust/shoulder it may…[Read more] -

a nice stiffener for small items like this is thin (1/16″) craft foam… it sews through without a problem and washes fine, especially next to wool. Vilene is water-soluble, but not a problem if not water-washing.
