the sandbox pants only go up to a size 8, but the Parachute and Art Museum go higher, but only to size 12. You’ll want to add crotch depth as well as width so that when they are worn, the pants don’t ride up or down. Something that looks fine standing still quickly becomes a problem when boys move!
Looking at size charts, a size 14 boys is about…[Read more] -

Reeni started the topic just a note: it works without the back opening! in the forum oliver + s: 2 + 2 8 years ago
I made a 2+2 blouse with some vintage fabric, a pretty floral-print eyelet. There was not enough fabric width-wise to have the eyelet run in the same direction front and back; after some fiddling it occurred to me to see if I could eliminate the back opening and cut the back out as one piece, and just make the front slit/neckline a little bigger…[Read more]

Reeni replied to the topic Increasing rise as well as length? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 8 years ago
IMHO, the best way to figure this out is to measure. My kids will not wear a pair of pants if it is uncomfortable in the groin; ds has actually worn pants on his hips rather than have them bunch up in between the legs. Too much skin in the back!
Take the front and back measurements of a pair of pants that he likes and compare them to the ones of…[Read more] -
Reeni replied to the topic Underwear! in the forum off topic 8 years ago
i don’t make underwear (yet!) but i have had these same thoughts when i find nice jersey or cotton prints. But I do sew quite a few stretchy things for my daughter who dances, and plan on making a few swim things for use this summer. I’ve used Jalie and their patterns are well-designed, and come in a very wide size range for the price; don’t…[Read more]

I can’t make my husband t-shirts, he will not allow it. If he did, and what I use for ds, cotton interlock, from Nature’s Fabrics.

Reeni replied to the topic Easter/spring sewing? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 8 years ago
Ah yes! For Easter, I’m also planning a Sketchbook shirt, Art Museum vest and maybe pants for DS — like yours, @thejennigirl, he will tolerate handmade if it is for dressy occasions or uniforms — not “everyday” where his judgement would be called into question! Ah tweens… he’ll be growing out of o+S sizes soon anyhow! Except this will do…[Read more]

Reeni replied to the topic Child classic jeans pattern? in the forum off topic 8 years ago
Ottobre patterns are confusing sometimes because there are so many on one sheet (you need good light to see the differences!) And they don’t include seam allowance. Instructions are included but no illustrated steps except for details like a zip fly. But they do come out well, with a kind of Euro, H&M kind of feeling, depending on fabric choice. HTH!

I have made jeans and “jorts” with an Ottobre pattern and they fit like commercial jeans… modern styling and cut, came out well in patterned denim, and upholstery-weight twill.
In O+s, I have done the Sketchbook shorts with the front pleats eliminated and the front pocket curved (more horizontal than almost parallel to the seam); those are very…[Read more] -

My Halloweeen hack of the School Days coat pattern to make dd’s requested belted peplum jacket with bell sleeves (she wanted to be Evie from the TV movie the Descendants..) went something like that. I made the toile and pin-fit it on her for the tucks — they ended up being quite close to the vertical seams on the original. (This is what made me…[Read more]

I feel your pain… but maybe you could still use the woven, just not at the neck binding? maybe some appliques or a pocket…

I would definitely buy and use a moto jacket pattern, I have used and used the School Days coat pattern — first as a raincoat, then as pirate coats, then as basis for this year’s raglan Descendants jacket. I’ve taken a stab at drafting a princess-seamed one but of course yours would be miles better. Would it be easier if it was XS,S,M,L,XL…[Read more]

I am trying to convince myself I don’t need an embroidery machine but the cost of monogrammed uniforms, those designs on Urban Threads, and dd’s upcoming communion (for which I will be making the most beautiful dress I can manage if it kills me) are pulling hard…

i got a deal awhile ago on a Brother 1034 and have no complaints… I wouldn’t buy a Brother sewing machine, but this serger and I get along just fine. It has made working with knits and spandex such a breeze, I can crank out a new t-shirt, or leotard for dd in about 30 minutes.
It makes rolled hems in both fine and bulky fabrics, and blind hems…[Read more] -

my favorite (because it’s practical!) mashup I’ve done is ironically the uniform skirts for dd… Sailboat shape and kickpleat, but badminton waistline/shorts construction (with buttonhole elastic) and playtime leggings/Liesl’s under-the-skirt knit shorts from her blog post.
but runner-up is the sunny day shorts/croquet dress in icepop…I might…[Read more]

may I suggest a nice wool for the pants for warmth? I am volunteered to make an outfit for my nephew whenever they decide to christen him (hopefully sometime in the spring) but I saw some white wool suiting at Joann’s that made me want to start right away.
