mkhs replied to the topic Jo-Ann's Butterick Sale March 6-8 –for those in the U.S. in the forum off topic 9 years ago
I picked up the new Lisette dress B6168 at JoAnn Fabrics this morning– it was in a separate, all-Lisette display on top of the pattern cabinets and marked as 40% off. When it rang up, I was only charged $1.66– I don’t know if it was a fluke, but it’s worth checking out if you’re going there anyway! Can’t wait to make it up. I have 3 yards of…[Read more]

The Ice Cream top is lovely for crawling babies. I really didn’t ever do dresses until she was walking.

I love the dress with the cross-over bodice! I’m going to get that. And the princess-seamed top with the trousers is very nice. Love that it comes with different cup sizes. I checked it out on the Butterick site to see the back view, and it’s great.

mkhs replied to the topic What are you sewing now? in the forum off topic 9 years ago
I just started a new project this morning that I’m very excited about– I picked up a raspberry cashmere sweater at Goodwill ($2!!) that is a women’s small. Heavenly soft. Ran it through a hot wash and dry, and I’m using it as the bottom part of an Ice Cream top to be worn as a layering piece– my 4yo is anti-sweater at the moment but in the past…[Read more]

mkhs replied to the topic Lengthening the dress in the forum oliver + s: bubble dress 9 years ago
Don’t add to either– add to the middle of the skirt. I don’t have the pattern in front of me, but if you make your lengthening line at a pair of notches it will all go smoothly.

mkhs replied to the topic Dart Detail- How would I re-create this? in the forum off topic 9 years ago
I think you would add width for gathering to the pattern at the bottom half of the dart, extending to the hem. Then before sewing the dart, run your gathering stitches, then cut on the center line, leaving a good bit uncut at the point of the dart. Gather to fit, press, sew dart.
That’s how I’d try it– what a lovely detail!!

mkhs replied to the topic Pocket decoration, avoiding bulk in the forum oliver + s: carousel dress 9 years ago
Fray-check can be really helpful with cotton lace, I find. I haven’t made up this pattern yet, but thinking about thick lace and bulk and French seams, I might try catching it just in the second part of the seam. So, stitch the lace to the pocket, sew the first seam, trim down the seam then cut the lace to just inside the stitching line and pull…[Read more]

What about just making a two-piece outfit and layering a lullaby layette long-sleeved top under a bubble dress?

mkhs replied to the topic Fleece or fleece lined leggings? in the forum oliver + s: playtime 10 years ago
I haven’t done the playtime leggings in anything other than cotton knit, but I’ve made up the nature walk yoga pants in a ton of different fabrics– stretch denim, jersey, Polartec fleece, cotton sweatshirt fleece. I know that Polartec does make a windproof fleece– I haven’t tried to buy it by the yard, I have some outdoor gear that my in-laws…[Read more]

mkhs replied to the topic Holiday Celebrations, Please Share in the forum off topic 10 years ago
My favorite holiday parade ever was when I lived in Honolulu ages ago, and the Dept of Public Works would put on their Christmas parade. Construction vehicles, street sweepers, garbage trucks, all decked out in decorations and colored lights and blaring holiday music as they drove around downtown. It was unexpected, sweet, and a huge hit with kids!

mkhs replied to the topic Contrast belt opinions wanted in the forum oliver + s: secret agent 10 years ago
How about a mustard stripe for the belt, or a leather belt with leather buttons? Or skip the belt entirely. You could put an interior casing with elastic at the back waist if you want to draw it in a little w/o the belt. If you do a contrast belt, maybe also do contrast sleeve tabs to tie it all together?

mkhs replied to the topic French seams for the side seam? in the forum oliver + s: class picnic 10 years ago
I have, on several I’ve made using my husband’s shirts (beards are rough on collars!). I’ve used both linen and cotton shirting– lightweight stuff. On flannel tops I’ve finished the edges with pinking or zigzag stitches– too thick for French seams.

mkhs replied to the topic bloomers for older girls? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 11 years ago
I wanted to report back that the badminton shorts make a fine substitute for bloomers. I lengthened the legs by 1″, changed the back waistband to sew up like Class Picnic shorts, and finished the bottom of the waistband with a bias strip. I made them to go with a Tea Party sundress, and they’re great for my active 3yo. I sewed them up in lawn, so…[Read more]

mkhs replied to the topic french seams with flat piping? in the forum oliver + s: tea party 12 years ago
I’ve done the flat piping twice, once in a loose, light gingham with false French seams, and once in a lawn with proper French seams (lawn for both piping and dress). I wouldn’t try it with any fabric heavier than lawn! If I recall correctly, I did grade the piping when I trimmed things back before enclosing the seam– helps to reduce bulk.
