nothing at the moment as preparations for Easter (we celebrated last week) and my late-night sewing tuckered me out. Luckily the insomnia has abated a bit. I signed up for KCWC (next week!) despite my better judgment. My goal is to cut out and sew another Cosi swimsuit for my oldest during that week. The girls have also expressed interest in…[Read more]

The School Days coat makes a lovely lightweight spring coat in corduroy.

Ups, I forgot to mention your mod. I have it pinned but never managed to try it out and that would be a sure bet for what I’m looking for! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

@AnaSofia can I humbly recommend my own alteration of the Sketchbook shirt for a polo shirt. I just made another long sleeved version (not yet on the blog) and it works really well

Boy’s patterns also do very well around here 🙂
The Art Museum, the Sandbox and the Sketchbook patterns have always been heavily used and I would like to believe these are in O+S best-selling list! I have made countless versions for all seasons and to be honest I’m only sorry I don’t blog more about it 🙁 (my fault, obviously).

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic LTTS – Cape in the forum oliver + s: little things to sew 9 years ago
Don’t feel bad Mel, I made exactly the same mistake, only the neckline of my cape was already finished with buttonholes and the hem periphery was more than 5 metres around ( adult cape)
I now try to remember that you can only turn a donut inside out if the centre hole ir outer perimeter are open! Although NanaMar’s suggestion of lining AND cape…[Read more] -

I have a feeling that happened to me too awhile ago. I going to try to remember what I did about it. I do remember being rather unhappy about the whole situation. Certainly not a moment to suck it up.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Could I add a lining after-the-fact? in the forum liesl + co: everyday skirt 9 years ago
As for fabric, do choose something slippery. I have a winter style/weight everyday skirt and it needs a slippery lining to stop it catching on tights.
Bemberg rayon or acetate or silk… I’d avoid a cotton like batiste or voile. Perfect for summer and bare legs but no good with stockings. -

I haven’t done it but it could be done if you’re friendly with your seam ripper. 🙂
I’d cut an identical skirt without pockets or waistband out of lining and about 1/2″ shorter. Then detach the waistband and reattach it over both skirt and lining. If you’re happy to have topstitching effect then the reattaching could be a one sew step by putting…[Read more] -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Fabric shopping in Paris in the forum off topic 9 years ago
I don’t know anything about fabric shopping, but as a fellow cyclist, if you’re brave enough to do the rond-point at the top of the Champs Elysee then go for it! If that sounds horrifying then I’d check out the velo-libre system and whether they still close the road along the Seine on Sundays. That’s a great scenic route.
Or, head out to the Bois…[Read more] -

I am in the U.S. but I have also noticed a problem with the site loading – it has been at least a month, and it happens on both my computer and my husband’s iPad. I always have to go up to the search bar on my browser and hit enter to make it reload before it will load up. If I don’t do that, it just says “loading” indefinitely. This is for the…[Read more]

Another insomnia-drivn late night at the machine. I learned last week not to attempt anything other than the dead simple at tht time of night, so I made another maternity top and skirt. I made the last two tops super simple with no ruching in hopes that I can also use them during those first post partum weeks when nothing else fits.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Any thoughts on the Sunday Brunch Jacket from flannel? in the forum oliver + s: sunday brunch 9 years ago
The only one I’ve made was flannel and i thought it worked very well. The Woollies flannels are lovely, I made a Music Class shirt in a herringbone flannel from them and it washed and wore perfectly. I say go for it. It will be more a heavy shirt weight than a jacket but the fabric will behave just fine.
You’ll be able to spot my flannel Sunday…[Read more] -
Masha Richart replied to the topic Any thoughts on the Sunday Brunch Jacket from flannel? in the forum oliver + s: sunday brunch 9 years ago
My only hesitation would be how the flannel itself would wear. I think it would sew up fine into the jacket, but I have yet to find a flannel that doesn’t fade and pill horribly after a few washes. I’d subject a sizable swatch to some rough treatment first.
Also, you’d probably want to use a lighter cotton for the bias bindings – flannel on…[Read more]
