Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Lisette B6358 Swimsuit Sew Along in the forum
Sew Alongs 9 years agoYay! The suits look great. I love the boning and all the “grown up” lady aspects of this pattern. I’ll miss the sewalong deadline but I’m right behind you, just six months behind… 🙂

@justsewit I have always gone in person yo the Melbourne store. There are stores in Wellington (NZ), Sydney & Melbourne (Aus) and Los Angeles (U.S.A.)
I guess they’d ship from whichever had stock and was closest to you.
Now that it has turned cold I want a wardrobe full of merino fleece long sleeved tees! -
juliamom2009 replied to the topic Sizing question in the forum oliver + s: popover 9 years ago
I did a Popover dress using fold-over elastic in the past. It worked great. I measured the dress on my daughter and sewed the FOE into a circle and applied it folded over the armhole. In fact, I just finished up another Popover. Intended to use fold-over elastic again but couldn’t find it in my disaster of a sewing room. Literally, the minute…[Read more]

There is rumoured to be a new book
The cover, it has a good look
But I just can’t decide
If I step up or hide
Perhaps a challenge to be undertook(I know, bad past tense 🙂 )
I can’t decide which is my size

Robin replied to the topic What are you sewing now? in the forum off topic 9 years ago
Jenny, I get “rattled” watching what is happening in the US. And it’s hard to work in the industry you do.
Sew something pretty. Hug your kids.
So wish I could just pop by for a gab and some stitching. Hang in there.

I’m wearing a merino fleece Metro T right now! Have a look at http://www.thefabricstore.com.au the have an L.A. store so US shipping should be reasonable.
There’s an amazing outdoor fabric supplier in the UK that I’ve purchased from, and I keep finding one in Canada when I’m searching online, but I forget the name…. -

Thank you, @justsewit for chiming in. I really appreciate it. I wondered if swayback might be what I was dealing with. I’ve got the book Fit for Real People and that was the only thing I could find that looked like it might be the problem. I just haven’t really noticed that on anything else I’ve made, so I wanted someone else’s opinion! I do…[Read more]

I could use a little help here sewing friends. I’ve successfully made a small bust alteration and feel really good about my muslin as far as that goes. However, the backside has some problems and I’m not sure whether to adjust the darts or adjust at the center back seam. I tried taking it in some along the center back seam, but that didn’t seem to…[Read more]

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Lengthen culottes in the forum oliver + s: lunch box tee + culottes 9 years ago
The culottes have a very dropped crotch, so this is one pattern where you’d probably get away with not making changes.
However, beware making such big size changes as you’ll lose the proportions of the pattern and could end up with something quite odd.
Perhaps you could make the 2T with size 4 leg length.
You could run a tape measure from front…[Read more] -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Faux Fly Basting Stitches. Removed or not? in the forum oliver + s: field trip 9 years ago
Replying to my own question… I’ve made these pants quite a few times now and I remove the basting stitches. The slight “openness” makes it look more like a functional fly.
I’m in the “remove them” camp. -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Finishing knits in the forum oliver + s: school bus t-shirt 9 years ago
@eboyd83 Emily a serger and an overlocker are the same thing, just US vs Aus/English terminology.
A coverstitch is the separate function which looks like straight stitching on top and serging/overlocking underneath. A coverstitch can be a stand alone machine or a combo serger/coverstitch. -
Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Finishing knits in the forum oliver + s: school bus t-shirt 9 years ago
Not to blow my own horn, but have you looked in the tutorials section of the Oliver + S blog? With just a bit of tinkering and practice, you can get a great, professional looking, and nearly unbustable hem using a twin needle.
A simple zig zag stitch will work well too, and if your thread colour matches well is not that bad to look at. - Load More
