I”ve more or less completed the Christmas doll sewing (more or less because I still vaguely want to make a few accessories to go with the outfits – I really need to start making sewing plans so that I don’t waste so much time wondering what to start on next). I’m simultaneously trying to plan my kids’ outfits for the large family portrait we are…[Read more]

Nicole replied to the topic How to cut faux fur to trim hood in the forum oliver + s: school days 9 years ago
Hi @kmac0107, you really don’t want it stretching as you sew, that will pucker the hood once the seam relaxes.
It is hard to advise without seeing the fabric, does it have a pile/nap?
My sewing mind says across the grain for the best result of the look of the fur (perhaps hand baste and sew very slowly to avoid stretching) but my logical mind…[Read more]

Nicole replied to the topic Has anyone made the class picnic shorts for a boy? in the forum oliver + s: class picnic 9 years ago
@JWo ,I must confess, when I made these https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/7738716408/in/album-72157626639099661/ I made them with the hand-down-in-mind for a boy.
I would absolutely put hem on a boy and definitely in a plain colour. -

Brenda – YES, I found those patterns! I used the jumper pattern for Molly (which was the original doll I owned) as the base for all the dresses I sewed and it worked great.
Good luck with your jacket. My husband has a soft shell that he loves – but it cost an arm and a leg; even $20 fabric is a bargain in comparison!
I am finding myself with…[Read more]

Sarvi replied to the topic My iron is dead in the forum off topic 9 years ago
I hate my Rowenta, despite using it with a spray bottle and thus not having any leaking/spitting issues, because it sometimes gets so scorchingly hot that even linen immediately burns. My next iron will be a cheapie.
My own stuff is never ironed because I don’t care, my child’s always is because I do care, and my husband is so handsome I’ve…[Read more]

That sounds challenging but in a good way Brenda.
I was reading and article recently that working on challenging projects may help prevent dementia. I cannot think of a nicer prevention.I made some taslon Class Picnic shorts for Matilda’s end of year concert, last night (they are doing a Beach Boy medley) I had so much trouble with them and then…[Read more]

Nicole replied to the topic Tunic: is the placket necessary? in the forum oliver + s: swingset 9 years ago
The back placket will extend the life of the garment. Lidia wore her for years past its ‘correct’ size as she could shimmy into it with the placket open.

Don’t take my ironing from me, it is how I sort my world!
A basket of crispy cotton and linen, dried in the sunshine, pressed smooth and hung on beautiful coat hangers and put away.
I would never get to watch telly if I didn’t iron 😉

I just tested one on my kid – it slipped easily over her head without unbuttoning the back. It was a teeny bit of a wriggle pulling it down through the chest, however. I don’t know if that helps or not! Honestly, if I were sewing in a rush it would work without the placket…but if I were sewing for someone else’s child, I’d put it in.

McStitch has it right. The full-size page should be printed at 100%, no scaling, no “fit-to-page” — no nothing. Exactly as it is.

Oh no @jwo
I made Trixie a gorgeous white Hopscotch nightie yesterday which will stay pristine as I used a too firmer knit and it won’t go over her head.
Le sigh. -

I love flannelette pj’s. Amy Butler flannel is amazing. I have some jammies that are onto their third owner.
I finished Beatrix’s ‘go’ on my rota, on to Matilda, starting with a Jumprope school dress.
