I knocked up some very sweet Puppet Show shorts for Trixie in scraps of linen. One pair charcoal and one pearl pink.

That should say ‘slub’ knit! 😉

Hi Sandra.
I am definitely not a knit expert and I have not made the Parachute polo yet but I would wonder about popping those fabrics in your stash.
Thinner knits looks stunning once sewn but can be a bear to handle. Perhaps not the best choice for a new pattern make.
That said, I made amy daughter a Field Trip tee from club knit and it sewed up…[Read more] -
Nicole replied to the topic how much ease on patterns – sail boat top in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 10 years ago
Hi Katy, welcome!
It is a little while since I made a Sailboat top but I found the fit spot on for my little one but I know I had to add length to the sleeve the older sizes. Maybe it is designed to be shorter?
I am in camp ‘one size up’ for a new pattern, with the theory being it will eventually fit.
I will also come onto the forum and ask…[Read more] -

Good luck Ellen.
Do you have access to an older machine? Many modern machines dislike bulk but older work horses will often chug through anything.
Alternatively, leave that button hole off, sew a faux button where it should be and sew a popper on the inside. I do find this blouse does benefit from a sew in popper just under the edge anyway. -

I have teenage girls that earn their own money, it is so hard to encourage them to shop ethically.
The really annoying thing is, the cheap and cheerful clothing they buy is shocking quality and I have to wash it separately and carefully press it back into shape.

Maria, I have been admiring your lovely sewing, a very big welcome to you.
@LightningMcstitch, as my son says, everything is science.

In one of my recent editions of Busiessweek magazine there was an article about US textile manufacturers (and one close to me in Gaffney, SC) working to secure all their raw materials from US growers again. I will try to find it and link for those interested.
I worked for several years with (then US manufacturer) Springs Industries, and it was…[Read more]

We watch The Big Bang Theory but I find I’m not laughing as much these days. And I really, really dislike Bernadette.
I used to like New Girl but I haven’t seen it in a while.
Friends was a favourite way back when, but I never watched the last 2.5 seasons. Now that it is on Netflix maybe I should remedy that.
Torchwood is horribly, gloriously…[Read more]

Did anyone catch the story on “Last Week Tonight” (HBO) that dealt with this?
You can see it here on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VdLf4fihP78 (some bad language involved). Very interesting and also entertaining.

We watched Daredevil on Netflix too but I was almost repulsed by the violence. A bit too much (and that is coming from someone who likes Game of Thrones – although I have issues with the gratuitous nudity in that).
Doctor Who is a favourite (going to the Doctor Who Experience in Cardiff this summer – yay!) as well as Torchwood.
Outlander is so…[Read more] -

I had a much-needed day off from work yesterday after being immersed in a huge project at work since just after New Years. It’s all finally done and I spent the day sewing up a storm.
I made a Metro tee for a friend, and a skirt and tank top for her daughter as well as a skirt for my girl. Then at the very last moment before school pick-up I…[Read more]

Haha! No, I meant I lack the skill to do French seams as well as you do! But I couldn’t resist mentioning your other favorite topic, hehe.

I believe I was the person Nicole mentioned above — at any rate I am the lucky recipient of an exquisite silk dress fitting that description. Nicole is right, while the bound seams at the armscye are gorgeous to behold (and very comfortable on that particular dress because of the fit) oftentimes the most practical solution for that specific seam…[Read more]
