  • Thanks, needlewoman! I’m planning to do the flutter sleeves for my younger niece (she’s 5) and the cap sleeve for my 10-year old niece.

  • Thanks! I’ll give that a whirl.

  • Hi, all –

I’ve mostly sewn for my toddler son and, as a side effect, my toddler nephew, but I’d really like to make a couple of gifts for my older nieces before seeing them this summer. I’ve loved this blouse pattern since it was released, so this is a nice excuse to sew a pattern I otherwise don’t have a reason to own.

    They’re not local, so…[Read more]

  • I like the idea of sewing for my husband, and I know he’d wear things I made for him, but practically speaking, I rarely even sew for myself. I know I’d buy and use a pajama bottom pattern, but I’m not sure how often I would make even a staple item that was more complicated. I might feel differently if my son is still willing to wear Mom-made…[Read more]

I like spaghetti strap tops, but only if I can get away with being braless in them (I’m small-breasted, so that usually means layering with a snug tank). Racerback tops always look like activewear to me, and I definitely wouldn’t wear one that showed the bra band itself. I am not a fan of visible bra straps – I think it looks sloppy (and that’s…[Read more]

My son has a couple pairs of RTW shorts made from a 70/30 cotton/nylon blend, and I love it – it doesn’t stain or wear as badly as his 100% cotton clothes, it dries more quickly than 100% cotton, and yet it feels softer and more comfortable than 100% nylon/Taslon. I’ve looked around online, but I can’t seem to find much. Mood has a few, but mostly…[Read more]

  • As for things to conquer – clothes for myself! That fit! I would really love a button-up shirt that fits well and flatters me- I have broad shoulders and a flat chest, so RTW shirts are either too short in the wrist and tight under the arms, or fit my shoulders but leave me swimming and shapeless elsewhere.

ETA: I’m mostly reluctant to dive into…[Read more]

  • @justsewit, I HATE sewing curtains! I may or may not have several sets currently languishing in my “needs to be finished” pile. I admit nothing.

Probably the most challenging thing I’ve sewn to date was fitted/all-in-one cloth diapers – it’s what got me back into sewing initially. Prior to getting pregnant, I hadn’t touched a machine in about a…[Read more]

  • Just finished View C for B6295 last night – it’s only my 2nd sew for myself. I like the pants, a lot, but oof. I’m guessing that since this is one of the Butterick patterns, there isn’t a lot of flexibility on things like seam allowance size and where it’s added, but I got SO FRUSTRATED every time I had to cut off the entire (gigantic!!) seam…[Read more]

  • Uh. That was a weird, weird cutoff. I meant buttonholes, not butt. Probably no need to interface the seat of the jacket!!

  • Hah! It was my first O+S pattern, too – a halloween costume for my then-3 month old son. Because what baby too young to roll over *doesn’t* need a trenchcoat?!
    (incidentally, I love the pattern!)

I can’t claim to be an expert, but I think it might hang funny in cotton jersey. If you try it, though, I would at a minimum interface behind the butt

  • I was just wondering this yesterday!

    How’d the training go, Ellen?

It’s really terrible that you’re getting shut out by your coworkers on this.

Thanks, Nicole. Do you happen to know – if you upload something as public, can you then change the settings to private, or does public seem to stick, too?

  • Enbee replied to the topic Flickr troubles? in the forum off topic 8 years ago

I don’t know whether it’s better to bump this thread or start a new one, but here goes. I’ve started adding content to the flickr pool, but even if I change a picture’s setting to public, I only see it if I’m logged in. I’ve double-checked the settings (I do have a couple with my child’s face visible that are private and thus only viewable by…[Read more]

Ugh – paying for training on these sorts of things can be so hit or miss. I really hope it’s helpful for you. I wish the maker movement had come along when I was a kid, and I wholeheartedly support your making the makerspace inviting for the girls at your school.

I looked up that model – fwiw, it does recommend Corel Draw (or rather, the Corel…[Read more]

ETA: the learning curve on the *design software* is pretty steep. People make whole (well-paid!) careers out of being proficient with Illustrator. I think once you have that talking to the machine software, the actual cutting is pretty straightforward, although my husband and his students have ruined plenty of plywood by messing up the scaling, or…[Read more]

My husband uses one at work, and I’ve toyed many times with the idea of trying it out for cutting fabric, which is my least favorite part of garment sewing.

I’m afraid I don’t even know what model my husband uses, but if yours is the kind that cuts through 1/4″ ply/acrylic/leather etc, I imagine the details are similar. For the one my husband has…[Read more]
