Hi Liesl, I have just been inspired by justsewit,
We really need a great Oliver and S pattern for girls swimwear, especially a pair of bather/togs/swimmers/cossie/trunks/swimsuit (depending on your dialet/location in Australia!)
Thanks again
12 years ago LINKmkhs @mkhsI would also love a tailored bathrobe pattern (and ditto on no waist tie for the littles!). For those sewists wanting a bathrobe NOW, I made Burda 9676 as a robe in flannel lined with chenille and it turned out nicely.
I wish Oliver + S would start offering a fabric guide for wider widths of fabric. I really don’t sew with quilting cotton, and the apparel fabrics I like are often 52-54″ wide, which drastically changes the layout when you’re dealing with such tiny pattern pieces. I could save quite a bit over time if I knew the correct yardage to buy.
12 years ago LINKTamara @justsewitMkhs, what I generally do if the fabric allowance is wide and I have narrower fabric is add the excess onto what they say on the pattern to tell how much I’d need – for example if I had 112cm fabric and the pattern needed 140cm fabric I just add the difference (38cm) to the fabric requirements. You can do the same if you are working with fabric wider than specified on the pattern.
He he Heidi you read my thoughts, I was going to put that on but thought better of it. How kind of you to be inspired by my thoughts and plans for making swimwear for the kids.I love how we keep inspiring each other to make things and ask for styles that others have made using other sources. My inspiration came from Beachmom and I know Nicole has made a few for her clan also.
I do have to add one thing, boys swimming gear (I’m in the wild west so I say BATHERS!) is really hard to find a decent pattern for so if you were planning to do a swimsuit pattern Liesl, please could you include a boy version somehow??
12 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love HeidiI’m from the west originally too, so I say bathers as well. But I do remember some heated discussions at school as to what they were called!
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizaI have purchased size labels through shops on etsy. You can often get a mixed bag of baby/toddler/girl sizes. Only problem is that I keep forgetting to stitch them in!
Recently, I’ve been shopping around for a nice boy’s suit pattern and haven’t found many. I know that boys’ patterns aren’t typically big sellers, but I wonder whether something truely classic and hard to come by would be worthwhile in the long term. For weddings, communions and other important occasions, it would be awfully nice to know there’s an O+S quality suit out there. I don’t sew much for the boys for a number of reasons: it just doesn’t pay when plain shirts and pants are so cheap to buy, they destroy stuff very quickly, and it’s simply not as much fun as dresses. However, I do sew special occasion things for them and costumes, and sometimes a dress coat. These are the times when the labor seems worthwhile.
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizahere I am asking for more. 🙂 As I search the internet for a doll dress that looks a little like the fairytale dress, I realize I’ve been thinking for a while now that if O+S released a book of their best patterns scaled for American Girl and Corelle I would buy it in a heartbeat.
12 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love HeidiYES, YES, YES, a book of the Oliver and s patterns for AG dolls PLEASE.
Thanks meleliza, I thought of this a couple of weeks ago as well and forgot it every time I came onto the computer.
12 years ago LINKTamara @justsewitI third this! I bought an AG doll for Miss IG last Christmas so being able to sew Oliver + s clothes for her by my daughter would be so much fun.
Meleliza have you tried LibertyJane patterns? They have a 1930’s dress that is close to it although doesn’t have the sleeve. But it is a start on the right track… maybe you could try drafting a dolly sleeve to match while we are waiting for the doll’s book?
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizaThanks, I will!
12 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love HeidiMeleliza, I’ve used this Katie Dress (and it’s free). If you gathered rather than pleated the skirt it would look a lot like The Fairy Tale Dress view B.
12 years ago LINKmcholley1 @mcholley1I echo that dressy boys patterns would be incredible! A blazer and a waistcoat with Oliver + s styling would be a gem to me! We have a family wedding next fall… so I’m already searching for patterns and am disappointed in the lack of well drafted options. And, I just want to say that I appreciate the boy patterns that y’all already offer. They are so poorly underrepresented in the sewing world. Is it that people don’t want to sew for their boys? Or that boy patterns tend to be technically a little more difficult?
11 years ago LINKdkbnyc @dkbnycas a pattern single, i would like pull on pj pants with an option shown to make them short.
I realize there are already 2 pajama patterns, but i dont need all that. i just want simple pull on pants, with a line to show where to cut them for shorts. Maybe with a mock fly or a 2 button fly- styled like boxer shorts.
11 years ago LINKTamara @justsewitAs a single I would like a singlet/ vest that could be used for either underwear, as an initial layer or to adapt it into a summer singlet top – for both boys and girls please.
A tie would be great also – for those formal occasions but also for those who need one for school.
Another dress shirt for both boys and girls please – with short or long sleeves.
Another body warmer type vest please.
Another shorts pattern please for both boys and girls.
11 years ago LINKneedlewoman @needlewomanA good nightdress pattern – all sizes, and maybe one that can be adapted to shorty pjs – Do American’s call them baby doll pj’s? – usually top is sleeveless with roomy bloomers. My only concern is that all the cottons available in commercial stores stay very clearly, “Not recommended for children’s sleepwear”. Apart from flannel what do people use?
11 years ago LINKJennifer1568 @Jennifer1568I know that I’ll buy whatever you design and like it but I would like to sew a wool blazer- like a tweed blazer with patches on the elbows and leather buttons, maybe. I would like to learn how to sew inset, bound pockets. It could be adapted for boys or girls. My daughter is growing up. I need patterns for an older child. She wears mostly separates now.
