Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 9 years agoHi Ava, very good questions. There is a stabiliser you can get that washes away. I would use this on the smaller and unlined portions just to stabilise the fabric whilst you embroider – it helps the fabric to not stretch or crinkle to the point of distortion. I think it comes in sheats so you would be able to cut it and baste stitch it under where…[Read more]

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 9 years agoThanks Tamara for the detailed tips. So this particular pattern will have a lining however what if I was to embroider some of the skirt part (like outline a design of the fabric) or for any other skirt part that doesn’t have a lining. Is it necessary to put interfacing on that few inches where I”m outlining the design or is it necessary to put…[Read more]

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 9 years agoHi Ava (@fitdoc)
I have this pattern and even though I haven’t actually finished one, it is a perfect pattern to use embroidery with. I am fairly experienced when it comes to embroidery, having just brought out some smocked dresses to fit my youngest daughter that I made my eldest daughter twelve years ago.
So, with this in mind, let me share…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoYeah, I kind of realized it was a huge question. However, thanks for pointing me to some good resources. I will just have to keep a running list of types as I peruse blog posts, pictures, etc. I wish one could find more stores that sold apparel fabrics (and decent ones).

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoThis is a pretty big topic and more than I can address in a quick reply. However, I did do an introduction to some basic garment fabrics in a CreativeBug class if you’re interested: https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/single/fabrics-101
I think if you look back at previous blog posts you’ll be able to gather a lot of information as well. Try…[Read more]

I don’t remember, but I seem to recall that the “patch” was sewn to the pants leg at the top and bottom edges. I’d be inclined to avoid interfacing or fusible because I think it would show through if holes wore through the first fabric, you know?

@liesl, was the second fabric attached via interfacing? Loose and just sewn in via the seams? (This would work for side seams but the top and bottom would be left loose or have an added seam to the outside.)
Thanks!

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoI am looking at sewing some shirts/blouses for myself. I would like to sew in fabrics that have a nice drape. 1) What are these fabrics? 2) What are the nicer fabrics to work with? 3) Are there any tips (previous posts?) for working with slippery fabric?
Also, I buy my fabric exclusively online since I am not happy with the quality at the…[Read more]

I’m not in the Facebook group:(
I have now ordered a copy of the book 🙂 It was frustrating that unfortunately finances did not allow me to order the book in the time frame.
But the books now coming 🙂 -

I’ve been making Kwiksew 4000, shirtdress with princess seams. Beautiful dress but I’m having trouble moving my arms forward 🙁
So I needed a mindless project, I’ve chosen to make a bookshelf quilt. It’s nice mindless piecing and if it works I’ll have a baby gift for a friend. If not it’s kept me nicely occupied 🙂 -

I would like to reproduce this skirt with some minor differences. I would like to use deep box pleats with the interior being the candy corn fabric. I would like scallops on the bottom. I also want to have an adjustable waist with button hole elastic. Would it be easier to try to modify the badminton skirt or use the dress pattern in the book?

Hi Liesl, if you enlarge the McCall’s picture you can see the quilting.

I’m not in the facebook group. While canvassing for co-sewists to go in on the postage to Malaysia with me, I asked an owner of a local shop and she decided to bring in a bunch to stock her shop. I’ve prebooked from her and my book (and 2 of my friends’) arrives next week, which I’m very excited about!

Out of curiosity, how many of you are part of the Building Block Dress Facebook group? Is anyone here NOT part of it?

Thanks, @clt3! It’s the quilting that’s throwing me off. I wanted something drapey-ish for a dress. But I’m still thinking that it must be available in another substrate someplace, because the original outfit doesn’t appear to be quilted.
