Our children start school this next Thursday although September dies sound much better! This summer here was not as fun as it normally is with my leg surgery. It was much tougher than i had thought. I have not really sewn in over two months! It’s driving me crazy so yesterday I picked back up some smocking.

Ha! In New York, you can always tell it’s the end of the month because all the bad furniture has been left on the curb for pickup. You can find some treasures, but there’s always a risk of bedbugs, which have become a real problem.
We don’t start school in Spain until September 8, either. Suddenly, summer isn’t moving quite so quickly as it…[Read more]

Most schools in Ontario (Canada) go back after Labour Day on September 6th.
We call the Labour Day long weekend, “Bad Furniture Weekend” because that’s when the highways are full of parents driving their kids off to college towing some fairly horrid looking furniture for residence.

Out curiosity, when does school start in your neighborhood? I think some schools have started already, yes?

Thanks Todd, I actually was like… I wonder if they’ve already done this to newer patterns? Haha. I don’t mind and was thinking prospectively anyways.

In the next day or two we will be improving security here in the Oliver + S forums by forcing all connections to use https. This means you’ll see a little green padlock in the URL bar in your browser, much the same way your bank or shopping site does. You won’t have to make any changes in the way you log in or visit; everything should be…[Read more]

Hi Kristen, I would be concerned about the sleeves. They are fairly narrow on this top. The combo that Audrey did looks great and would be a good sleeve solution.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Coverstitch Machine? in the forum off topic 9 years ago
@purplevann1 if you really only want to hem t-shirts then my suggestion is to get familiar with a twin needle and woolly nylon. It will be almost free compared to coverstitch, dead easy to change thread colour and saves having to store another machine.
Or buy yourself something shiny 🙂 -

Todd,
I have a suggestion for PDFs in the future. Today when I went to print up the badminton skort, I only want to print the pages I need and not the entire thing. When I open it, some of the pattern pieces aren’t “labeled” because they are just small parts of the pattern. So I sit and look and tile between pages to see if 4b is part of my…[Read more]

My ten year old cracked me up when she asked if I was going to make a rough draft of a tshirt before I used the good fabric. Sounds better than making a muslin.

Oh, and here’s an interesting discussion of the controversies behind awards for children’s books (who knew?) that I came across while looking for a book on William Blake for my child. I sharply disagree with some parts of this piece but I do like that it asks questions more than it offers pat…[Read more]

I heard this interesting program a while back: http://www.npr.org/programs/invisibilia/483855073/the-problem-with-the-solution
I was struck by the thorn in the heart of it: that our desire to help those close to us who are suffering, our emotional investment in their wellbeing, may be the very thing that makes us unfit to help.
More on the…[Read more]

Thank you so much! I’m just starting to get back on my feet, and it’s been nice to have lots of reading to keep my occupied during my recovery. Many weeks to go before I’m fully myself again, so I appreciate any reading suggestions you send my way! xo

I recently had this problem as well. As it turned out, the hook itself needed to be replaced because it had bent. I’d recommend bringing it to a good repair shop who can analyze the problem for you. It’s probably best if you can show them exactly what’s happening. Now that mine has been replaced it’s running like a dream–for the first time in…[Read more]
