  • @maraya thanks for your thoughtful response to my post.

I’m glad there are people who understand that the old adage “penny wise, pound foolish” still holds true. We want our patterns to give everyone a sewing experience from start to finish that exceeds their expectations. We know that the most important commodity in most people’s lives today is…[Read more]

  • Thanks @georgeandizzy. I’m not sure if that’s it or not. They’ll often do a special printed display just for the brand. Has anyone else seen anything like that?

Sorry if this is really obvious to the North Americans, but why wouldn’t a red shawl work in May/spring? In Australia there aren’t really any guidelines for what colours to where at what time of year, although red and green together do say “Christmas”.
And why not tights and boots in spring if it’s still cold enough for them?
    On a 10ºC (50F) day…[Read more]

….I just did the conversion – 50F is 10C – that is seriously middle of winter at its worst for me, and for anyone else who lives in a moderate climate. I’d be moving if 50F was a normal summer temp!

I’d go a dress in a pretty floral fabric (and you do Liberty so well, MC!) – long sleeves and a cardi – and seconding Nicole’s call for a singlet.…[Read more]

I tend to sew the tab with a smaller then usual seam allowance, trim well and trim off the corners. If you can’t find tweezers scissor ends wrapped in a bit of tape will work too.

Oh, the locking kind? Those get a great grip.

  • Sarvi replied to the topic Wedding Wardrobe Help? in the forum off topic 10 years ago

Why would we recommend a spring dress to somebody who’s specifically said she’s concerned about getting cold? That would be so weird? Apologies if you were asking for Irish spring wedding and I misunderstood! I was replying to mcholley — different circumstances, different person, different needs.

  • Haha, all right, now we’re talking! I think I still have the selvedge from some Armani cashmere coating around here somewhere. Like Nicole said, the only thing worse at that price than buying too much is buying too little. Cashmere coat with the grain going the wrong way on the collar because I tried to be clever — now that would not be cute.…[Read more]

  • What on earth are you guys sewing with that a third of a yard is so high-stakes? If somebody has a line to cashmere and is holding out I’m going to be furious.

  • Oh yes @lightningmcstitch, it’s all about fabric width. If you find something that’s wider than what’s specified, you can change the layout and perhaps use less fabric.

But can you really beat the computer? It would be an interesting John Henry vs. the steam hammer challenge to pit you against our computer if we have the width of your fabric and…[Read more]

  • We’ve heard that there is a separate box out for the new Lisette patterns, but we haven’t seen it yet–if you can believe that.

If someone is going shopping next week to get these on sale and happens to see the box, please take a photo and share it here. We would love to see what Butterick has done.

  • For what it’s worth, here’s how we determine yardage. This may help you understand a bit about how much you may be able to cut back on required yardage when purchasing fabric. And I know some of you enjoy these behind-the-scenes peeks at our process, so here we go.

But first, a disclaimer. If you read this, think you’re good enough to squeeze out…[Read more]
