Part of the issue is that a simple pattern makes the lace easier to work with. I don’t have a lot of time to piece lace by hand to fit say, a full skirt. But I don’t think they’ll be entirely the same, just similar. Mine will be grown up shaped and hers will be little girl shaped.
I figured I’d be in some of the pictures. For the wedding, I…[Read more]

All that sounds complicated, to be honest. But I’m happy to report that after an adventurous Friday afternoon rush hour (Philly takes Friday afternoon rush really really seriously) we located the print shop in a slightly creepy basement despite the lobby confusion of an Asian American conference of some kind and picked up a correctly scaled p58…[Read more]

My mom and I never matched, so I guess I’m not scarred. Though it would still scar me if I thought I was dressing like her. Shudder. And I didn’t have siblings to match with.
It will be funny, I think, but I also think it will make for a good future date night dress.

We have a December bridal shower that’s not really supposed to be Christmas-y and yet we can’t wear spring dresses. And because she’s the flower girl, I felt a new dress is in order. I’m totally poaching from BHLDN, but will make her a long sleeved sheath from gold lace that I will underline in pink satin. I even plan to make the bows at the…[Read more]

Agreed. I’m trying one more place and then will officially give up on the large format concept altogether.
There aren’t any print shops that are on my way to school, groceries, soccer or fabric stores. They are mostly in the finance district, but I found an architectural place that’s sort of near a birthday party I have to take one kid to…[Read more]

So I really want to sew up that Bistro Dress and I thought I’d take another stab at this large format printing malarkey. I got some recs for copy shops then started by calling a place close to hubby’s office. They quoted me precisely $57!
I’m going to say that again: fifty-seven United States dollars.
good grief.
If I upload it to Staples.com,…[Read more]

I think cord with a lightweight lining is perfect. If you under stitch, I don’t see how it could be a problem. I have made this in pink cord with a scrap of voile for the lining and it works nicely. I just made the dress from the new Brooklyn pattern company in cord too, again with voile scraps for lining. I under stitched the neck and it works…[Read more]

I love “Christmastime in the city.” I’ve loved it in New York, London, Vienna and at home in Philadelphia. Vienna might have been my favorite, though, where every available square in the entire city turned into a Christmas market each with its own specialty. The one at Schonbrunn castle was for handmade toys, the one at Spitalmarkt was indie…[Read more]

soda on its own refers to soft drinks like Coke, Pepsi, etc. However, yes you can order a whiskey and soda, but most people wouldn’t mistake that for a children’s drink. Not that I personally consider Coke a children’s drink either, but the kind of soda is usually clear in the context.
Jinx on the other hand, is about saying the same thing at…[Read more]

Ps – I wouldn’t even use the pattern for the skirt, just measure how long it needs to be for each girl and tear a strip right across the full width of the fabric. If it’s wide, that may be all you need, no seaming. 1yd of 60″ tulle, folded in half, pin to the lining and gather both together.

Kmac I second music box for the wedding. I have made it with gathers and pleats and it can look very formal indeed. It works wonderfully with silk or flowy cotton and it’s extremely easy to sew. If I had to make matching multiples, that is absolutely what I would pick. You could add a sash with on trouble at all. You could also line it and add a…[Read more]

meleliza replied to the topic where on the waist do they fit? in the forum liesl + co: girl friday culottes 10 years ago
I think these fit more like a skirt than pants, so they don’t dig in when you sit the way pants do.

meleliza replied to the topic pleats in the forum liesl + co: girl friday culottes 10 years ago
I had the same issue and needed to re read the instructions carefully. The pockets are really hidden in the seams rather than your typical side seam pocket. If you’ve done all the pleats and darts correctly and the waistband fits the way you want you could take in the back darts and/or center seam to make it match.

Nicole, I should think anyone who can single handedly raise 5 – going on 6 – lovely children is plenty awe inspiring. I don’t know what the culture of work is like in Australia or in rural communities, but one of the greatest myths in urban America today is that any one person can do it “all.” Or that some moms work and others don’t work. Based on…[Read more]

meleliza replied to the topic Fairy Tale with Buttons on Back in the forum oliver + s: fairy tale 10 years ago
You will need to draft a button placket. You could use one of the patterns with buttons for a guide. I’d be inclined to just button the bodice and not all the way down, but it’s really all a matter of preference. I just finished a Communion dress for one of my sons classmates. What are you making it out of? I’ve made it for Communn in cotton…[Read more]
