Maggie replied to the topic Retrospective magnetic snaps insertion in the forum oliver + s: school days 6 years ago
Hi @speeedymog! I just installed a magnetic snap in a bag I’m making. The instructions said to cut out a silver dollar sized piece of fusible fleece, thin cotton batting, fleece, felt, etc. to put behind the snap in addition to regular interfacing on the fabric, which you’ve already done. I think it gives the fabric a little extra strength and…[Read more]

Hi @Mima! This isn’t exactly answering your question, but what about using the Girl on the Go dress pattern instead? It looks quite similar in style to the Chai Tee (the sleeves are almost identical, it seems), is already dress length, and comes in teen sizes. You could maybe even add a some width to the shoulders to make the little pleats, like…[Read more]

Maggie replied to the topic Clipping into Staystitching? in the forum oliver + s: roller skate 6 years ago
Thank you for checking in, @motherof5 ! Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to proceed yet. I’m a student and have a lot of homework, so my sewing has to happen in small increments on the weekends. Hopefully I can get a little more done this weekend, though! After this version for myself I’m planning a roller skate in lace for my best friend’s…[Read more]

Thank you for your response, Nicole! I didn’t understand that staystitching is meant to aid in the sewing process, and doesn’t matter after that. I’ll now confidently clip to the seam line.

Hello! I’ve sewn the neckline and armholes on my roller skate dress, and the next step is to trim the seam allowances to between 1/8″ and 1/4″ and then clip the curves so that they won’t pucker when the dress is right side out. Previously, though, the instructions said to staystitch the neckline with a 3/8″ seam (so the stitching is now 1/8″ away…[Read more]

Maggie replied to the topic Enlarging the Brunch Jacket from size 8 to size 10/12 in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 6 years ago
Based on your granddaughter’s measurements, I’m wondering if you really need to increase the width at all. Her chest measurement, which is the most important measurement for a jacket, is within the size 8 measurements, and her height corresponds with a 10, only one size bigger. If there was more of a disparity between height and chest sizes you…[Read more]

Thank you for your help, @lighteningmcstitch! I just checked out your mermaid dress – it is amazing. And thank you, @lieslgibson ! It will be a gift for my friend. I’m a little nervous, as I’ve never sewn with lace before.

Maggie started the topic Roller Skate Dress in Lace in the forum oliver + s: roller skate 6 years ago
Hello! I’m thinking of making a roller skate dress in lace, using lace as the main fabric and solid as the lining. It would be similar to this lovely dress from Skirt as Top, but would include the elastic casing. I would lower the casing a few inches to hit at the natural waist. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for sewing the casing so…[Read more]

Hello! I am making a blouse out of a lovely lawn using the Croquet Dress pattern. As the material is a bit sheer, I was hoping to line the dress such that the main blouse and lining would be separate at the sides and bottom. I am rather new to garment sewing, though, and can’t figure out how to do this; I was wondering if anyone had any…[Read more]
