Wow, that’s a lot of great info, thank you Nicole! I know Gertie from Gertie’s Blog for Better Sewing (not sure of the exact name) is very keen on vintage as well, and might have some additional tips. Off to peep at Nicole’s handiwork 🙂

What an interesting question! I don’t think it’s a huge issue either way, and there hasn’t been any prior discussion about it, but it’s very thoughtful of you to ask.
Speaking only for myself, I’d say that if you think your question would fit well within an existing discussion (and you can find it, sometimes it’s hard to turn up a thread you know…[Read more]

We’re starting a new round of work to do performance testing and tweaking of the site to address some of these issues with load time. I’m hoping you’ll all see performance improvements over coming weeks as we make some changes behind the scenes.
Yes, @motherof5, the way the forums work is that if you are not logged in you get a cached version of…[Read more]

I have finished four of the nurses capes but they are quite small so I have decided to make matrons using the LTTS cape pattern in red wool.

@Linda, I am pretty sure I added it afterwards…. I *think* I sewed the edges and the top but left the bottom free for movement.
Those dresses went to Humble, Texas. 🙂 -

The School Days coat makes a lovely lightweight spring coat in corduroy.

That is adorable!
I sew with vintage patterns and have a very large stash. The instructions are usually pretty good, they generally instruct you to clip seams and under stitch and often have lots of notches to help match things up. They often don’t tell you when to neaten your seams, watch out for that.
The sizing can be very slim (a reason why I…[Read more] -

Ups, I forgot to mention your mod. I have it pinned but never managed to try it out and that would be a sure bet for what I’m looking for! Thanks for the reminder 🙂

@AnaSofia can I humbly recommend my own alteration of the Sketchbook shirt for a polo shirt. I just made another long sleeved version (not yet on the blog) and it works really well

Boy’s patterns also do very well around here 🙂
The Art Museum, the Sandbox and the Sketchbook patterns have always been heavily used and I would like to believe these are in O+S best-selling list! I have made countless versions for all seasons and to be honest I’m only sorry I don’t blog more about it 🙁 (my fault, obviously).
A boy’s (and…[Read more] -

Linda, thank you and congratulations!
I made that dress in a quilting cotton so it was a little stiffer anyway but I did tweak the top of my scallops. If you look at my tute, I pressed the top flat and this seem to help the scallop stay out.http://fiveandcounting-motherof5.blogspot.com.au/2011/01/bubble-dress-part-five.html
As for the longer…[Read more]

I think if I was to sew a coat from fleece I would use a simple pattern with fewer seams.
Something like this https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/sets/72157627425463919/
These patterns are very basic, mind. You will need to get your ‘O+S’ on in regard to clipping and grading seams there are no directions for that.
However, with fewer seams…[Read more] -

Thank you MC.
We are on school holidays and it is lovely. Our weather is still very mild so the Fab Five are taking full advantage and packing food into rucksacks and disappearing into the bush for the day.
Lidia and Matilda have taught themselves ‘knitting’ with a plastic loom thing. It makes a perfectly acceptable farm beanie so it is very…[Read more]

Welcome Lucy!
I am keen to see the LTTS cape in a quilted fabric.I am sewing a polo shirt for my husband but after that I have 1/2 dozen nurses capes to make for the school students for ANZAC day. They should be nice and quick, the pattern is based on a boomerang pillow case.
