  • Sounds like a very cozy moment, I’m sure it will be a wonderful memory for your daughter, curled up on the couch with mama while she sews…

  • I have two fairy tales, two bubbles, and a Scirocco (Figgy’s) done as recital dresses with white bodices and black skirts. Two are in cotton, two in silk, the Scirocco in linen. Silk looks fantastic, cotton is easiest to wear, linen wrinkles like crazy (obviously, right? it was for a very hot day and I thought she’d be cooler and more comfortable)…[Read more]

Still working on the Arielle. I am really enjoying taking my time and producing a beautiful garment. It is a simple pattern with some opportunities for nice touches like a bias-bound facing and hand-blind-stitched hem (did that last night in front of the TV). Tonight I’ll make buttonholes and sew on buttons and then it will be ready to present…[Read more]

I’m really lucky that I have a great brick and mortar store near me – I went shopping for school uniform fabric there. I bought about 5 different substrates – all manufactured by Robert Kaufman. I have pre-washed all, and they washed up great. One was a twill, one corduroy, one that feels almost like a heavier weight stable knit (suitable for a…[Read more]

  • A tulle circle skirt is a genius idea as that gets around having to seam the tulle.
However, the Fairy Tale dress has a zipper that crosses the waist seam which would complicate things if you wanted the tulle on the outside. Maybe I’m being unambitious but I think an invisible zipper and layers of tulle will not go nicely together.
    You might need…[Read more]

I guess so, Tamara. I still feel like I’m playing at it though.

I am working on an Arielle skirt (Tilly and the Buttons) for my sister using some yellow patterned Lisette twill from a few seasons ago. She had a birthday last month and because of all the “excitement” in our lives I didn’t give it much thought. I basted the skirt together and she came over yesterday to try it on. It was kind of fun having her…[Read more]

  • I did join now and it says something about the group being searchable but members and posts are only visible to members. Or something to that effect.

    Thanks!

@justsewit yeah, Tamara, I’m more of a Facebook reader than poster – I do belong to several sewing groups…some informative, some drama (which I then leave). A good way to learn new…[Read more]

I just hit the “purchase” button on a Brother 2340cv coverstitch machine!! My siblings (I have four of them) and father were very generous for my birthday last month. I hemmed (ha ha) and hawed over buying it, but when the hem on my newly sewn Colette Mabel snapped today while I was giving the kids a bath, it was the last straw. I can’t wait…[Read more]

  • You may want to consider changing your group from “Public” to “Closed” – personally, I don’t need my non-sewing (like work, basketball, soccer etc.) friends seeing my posts/comments in sewing groups….not that there’s anything wrong with sewing…I’m also weirded out when my non-sewing friends follow me on Instagram as well – maybe it’s just me!…[Read more]

  • @mcholley1 I was thinking of you, after your comment on my blog about your daughter eschewing bright colours, as I’m due to start work soon on a zebra print Fairy Tale dress! Mine is for opening night of Carnival Of The Animals where children are invited to dress up as their fav animal (I vetoed fake fyr onesies!)
A mad print like that on a Fairy…[Read more]

  • Because it is always fun to hear all of your ideas….

My daughter wants a black and white recital dress…any fabric/pattern ideas to keep it interesting? We don’t have a dress code. Our “recitals” aren’t formal. Basically, our tiny music school takes over the baby grand at a local nursing home after dinner every few months and plays for the…[Read more]

  • @erysiphe well that’s maybe slightly better than what I was immediately reminded of: Swine Erysipelas. Disease of pigs caused by Erysipelothrix bacterium.
Perhaps we can invent the Greek muse of sewing AND powdery mildew and call her Erysiphe.
    Welcome!
