What are you sewing now?

2/3 of the way through my red on red ruffle for my pettiskirt. BUT I didn’t notice the thread had broken and now it’s wrapped around an internal piece of the machine! Taking a break before I decide weather to take the top off, go to the sewing machine shop or just keep sewing.
12 years ago LINKJust finished up my second Jumprope dress (no wonkiness in the placket this time; hooray – only my 3-year-old will probably never wear it, as she says it is “for a boy.” Sigh.
Going to take a mini-break from O+S patterns now, and sew up a Christmas tree skirt for which I bought fabric 18 months ago. I’m no longer in love with the prints and would rather not see them sitting in my stash (though they will be fine under the tree; go figure). Then I suppose it will be time for the velveteen Playdate. I’ve got a swatch of the fabric in the washer right now to motivate me.
12 years ago LINKTamara @justsewitI’m still cutting things out and I worked out with all the things I have put on the list for summer wear, it will take me the whole school term to get it all done!
At the moment on the cutting table is laid out and pinned but not yet cut, a Book report dress with short sleeves in Heather Bailey Nicey Jane – pink of course! I hope to follow that up with another Book report with short sleeves in that lovely blue lawn from Spotlight that I think etcetera used as a croquet dress. It too has pink in it so the girl will be happy and the blue is almost a purple.
I also have a green spot/stripe Icecream dress waiting in the wings, a pink hula hoop skirt and of course the other things that I cut out last weekend including the sketchbook shorts with the no seam allowance cut backs that I have to re-cut.
Tomorrow I am sourcing the whereabouts of the Jumprope dress short sleeve pattern piece that has gone visiting in another pattern somewhere and cutting out three Jumprope dresses. I am actually hoping to actually sew something tomorrow too!
12 years ago LINKLightning McStitch @LightningMcStitchWow that will make quite a pile!
I’ve just finished the Nature Walk Pullover to go along with the Pants I made yesterday. Both have been made from fabrics which were to hand and wearable by my son but not exactly anything to get excited about. The point was to do a trial run to test the pattern and the fit before trying to make my costume….
I’ll need to redraw the collar to make it much more seventies, work out how to put a zipper in again (I think I’ll refer back to the School Photo pattern for this) in order to allow it to become a jumpsuit that he can get into through the front, and then use the Croquet Dress instructions to fashion a casing to attach top to bottom.
We’ll see……
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizaIsn’t anyone working on Halloween? It’s approaching faster than I can bear to think about. I’m officially starting on costumes this weekend, though I’ve been planning and gathering supplies for a while now. 4 costumes in total for my 3 kids, though one is already halfway done. Only one will involve an O+S pattern, though.
First, I’m trying to finish up a very difficult coat and some doll clothes for baby girls birthday next week. I’m making a tiny copy of her denim music box jumper and a sort of copy of her yellow flowered picnic blouse and I even have just enough tiny scraps of her lisette dragonfly 2+2 blouse to try and copy that too.
12 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love HeidiThose dolls clothes sound gorgeous!
My machine went in for repairs/service yesterday, but I have borrowed my friends machine, now just have to work out the front loading bobbin! But before then I am enlarging the hula hoop skirt to a 14 and 16 (not sure which I’ll make yet).
12 years ago LINKMama_Knowles @Mama_Knowlesmeleliza, I have been slowly working on halloween costumes for my five kiddos too. I have to finish three this weekend to be done in time. Sewing has been been slow do to beiung at the ER twice this week. Hopefull everything here will calm down adn I get caight up on my house cleaning.
12 years ago LINKTamara @justsewitI “found” a pair of black class picnic shorts today whilst going through and sourcing the pattern piece that grew legs and walked. All I had to do was stitch the elastic in place and handstitch the elastic casing closed. Tried them on miss10 and they fit with ease so she now has a pair of shorts to wear to school after telling me she’d changed her mind over wearing her skirt due to wearing bike pants to school and worrying about getting into trouble. She is still not convinced over the skorts but I have a pair cut out ready in order to help her see that they really do look like a skirt.
No sewing tomorrow as we have shopping and haircuts but I will be sewing Sunday. I have about 16 items cut out not including the t-shirts I am still waiting for fabric on. I still have several things to cut but I think I may make a start on the pile and cut out again later.
We don’t really celebrate Halloween but it is fun to see everyone getting prepared – the only trick or treating I did was at the age of 8 and I remember trudging around the neighbourhood draped in an old sheet! The lengths we now go to for costumes is really to be commended.
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizaWell, I know Halloween is an American tradition, but I figured there might be a few Americans here. Yes, the lengths indeed. You wouldn’t believe the shopping I’ve had to do online and on foot to find some nice green fabric. It’s a really hard color to come by. Most is too minty or too yellow or too olive or just plain yucky. I bought some soft, retro looking pastel green Peau de soie only to arrive home and find a swatch in the mail of the pretties emerald silk/cotton sateen. Sigh. That may be the winner. God knows what I’ll even do with pastel green Peau.
Doll clothes are coming along nicely. Must be finished for baby girls birthday on Thursday. My little client is coming tomorrow morning to try on her fairy tale dress in progress. Oh, it is so very very lovely. I can’t wait to share it!
All Saints pagean costume starts tomorrow afternoon, then on to Peter Pan and the rest of Jake. As long as I have Tinkerbell fabric finalized, ordered and in hand by next Friday, I should have plenty of time. My fabric guy showed me the most interesting gazar today in emerald and gold, which might just make a wonderful overlay to the tink skirt, don’t you think?
12 years ago LINKNicole @motherof5Hugo has won the role of Romeo in the end of school production so I have a ‘New Romantic’ shirt to sew.
We don’t ‘do’ Halloween but its last term so there will be costumes for Presentation Night.
Lidia needs a shark costume,Zara is trying out for the lead in Oliver and Elsa wants Nancy but she thinks she will get Fagin(which she reads perfectly for and with her few years of ballet she jigs an old man dance nimbly for the role).
Melanie, may I ask what ‘peau de soie’ is?
12 years ago LINKwith love Heidi @with love HeidiCongrats Hugo and good luck to E and Z.
I am making another hula hoop skirt in blue, size 10 with 3″ added to the flounce. I have also enlarged the pattern to a 14 and 16 and as well as tracing off nearly all the sizes!
12 years ago LINKMama_Knowles @Mama_KnowlesMeleliza, I can’t wait to see your Tinker bell costume! It sounds so beautiful already! I am almost done with Sweet pea’s Periwinkle costume. (I think your little one and Sweet pea would look so cute together!) I am hand sewing on some lovely white feathers right now to finish it then I will be makeing a white undershirt like Cindy new tute. Then onto a a the older boys costumes.
12 years ago LINKLightning McStitch @LightningMcStitchAll these costumes and acting roles are sounding exciting.
My son declared at dinner tonight that the only thing that’s making him sad is that his Evel Knievel costume isn’t ready. Oh the drama of being four years old.
So I’ve cut it out. …. I think. It might take a few goes to get it right as there’s a lot of imagination and pattern bending going into it. But luckily I’ve got lots of this white polyester stuff on hand.
Thus far I’ve got a Nature Walk Pullover and Pants to be attached to each other with a sort of Croquet Dress casing. Some major modifications to the collar and a zip to be inserted down the middle. Then a cape which is essentially the Red Riding Hood cape from LTTS but without the front sections so it ends at the shoulders. I’ve drafted my own little collar for the cape so it can be buttoned on and off the main collar. I’ve also drawn a hem facing a bit like the one from the Family Reunion Dress.
Now I’ve been doing a late night online search for a USA flag Number 1 like Evel had on his chest and the back of his cape. Apologies to the Americans on the forum, but searching for “Patriotic USA patches” leads one to some pretty frightening places. I’m now going to bed a bit depressed at the state of the world!
12 years ago LINKWe don’t celebrate Halloween either, so I’m onto Christmas sewing. Tonight I’ve just got to do the final stitching for the bias tape on the outer ring of my Christmas tree skirt (which has actually been really fun to sew). In the meantime I’ve prepped the lavender velveteen for DD1’s Christmas Playdate. I also need to make a Christmas present for my niece – I have a scrap of vintage gold brocade (thanks, grandma!) and a red velveteen curtain (thanks, thrift shop!) that I think are going to become a Sunday Brunch skirt and jacket, respectively. After that, I should probably get started on the newborn fitted diapers I will need for #3-on-the-way (yikes, only four months to go!) I have some lovely bamboo fleece and organic bamboo velour; I just need to figure out how many layers to make the diapers. With DD1 we only used prefolds and with DD2 we had some fitteds that I sold, thinking she would be the last.
12 years ago LINKmeleliza @melelizaYeah, I wouldnt recommend that as a search term. The Internet definitely lets the crazies loose on the world. You may have better luck with “historic American flag.” Or I would look for an evil kanevail fan site. Otherwise just wing it. I don’t really know off hand what his costume looks like.
So the Fairy Tale dress calls for a zip, but I’m wondering if there is a better option? I want her to be able to wear it for dress up as long as possible, and if there was something she stood a chance of getting on and off herself, that would be good too.
