What are you sewing now?

Vothgirl, this pattern would be perfect to use up large scraps with – i have some Sarah jane fabric that would be perfect for a boy version. But there is no one (yet) to sew for.
Nicole you are very fortunate to live in a state where little tiny places that sell, fabric are still going. Our last little place closed last October and it was very sad to see – but then it didn’t sell beautiful items fit for winter coats, just quilting fabrics which was still worth a visit though. I was thinking of making a velveteen jacket for Imogen this year. I will look out for some on my next Spotlight trip – or try and find some “pretty coloured” suede or something.
I spent the afternoon yesterday giving my mum a “tour” of my sewing stash – you can’t help but have a sticky beak when a, the bed is right next to it and b, the doors are STILL not put on. So I pulled out various prints for her to ooh and aah over.
I also consoled my aunty in law who was complaining of how expensive bought clothing is (she shops at Myer of all places) and how they don’t fit. Being Phillipina she’s tiny and has a really lovely figure. I said she needs to come to my house and get measured up so I can make a muslin fitting garment to see how her measurements compare and then she would have something to work with to either sew herself or (ask nicely) and I could make her some – her excuse is too much farm work (as if that deters one from sewing?).
So until my guests depart there will be minimal if any sewing on the machine but I do have some hand stitching to do. I might even crack on with the cross stitch picture I was taking to do at piano lessons and haven’t picked up in a while.
After the children return to school (mid next week) I will be able to really get going on the winter clothing. We will need them by then. School trousers amongst them. I have found a suitable pattern that is a distinct look a like to the ready made versions that I will use instead of building an Oliver and s hybrid – it will save time.
Speaking of measuring kids, N will be wearing size 12’s the tens are just getting snug and short – tops not so much but bottoms absolutely. He has shot up in the air. And miss I want to be doing my own thing has to have everything Oliver and s enlarged – long lean and growing like mad!

@justsewit yes, the Lullaby Layette is perfect for large scraps! My first set used fat quarters and scraps I’d had laying around for years – one fat quarter was just barely enough for either the front or back of a 0-3m bodysuit.
I’m also looking forward to giving my mum a “tour” of my fabric stash when she comes to visit and see her new grandbaby in a couple months! π I can’t seem to stop adding to it π but there are so many lovely fabrics out there that just call my name when I see them.

I have broken the back of Liddy’s coat. Just putting the lining and the main together and then the hand sewing.
The Twins tried on their winter uniforms and to their horror, the only ‘bottoms’ that fit are their woollen plaid skirts.
There is no way they want to wear those every day (I think they look lovely) so they are desperate to queue jump and have some navy and grey trousers made. We are hoping the Field Trip and Art Museum with a fly will work.

Sent hubby to purchase more non iron on interfacing whilst he was in town today so I can trace and alter more patterns. Because the guests have now gone home, it means I can actually sew this week (yippee!) I found a trouser pattern that is a “dead spit” for the school trousers so will trace them off and try them out. If they work then we will have school trousers NOT from the uniform shop (ssshh!). They have decided the girls have to freeze in skirts and tights all winter and trousers aren’t allowed.
That will count as Noah’s turn and then I can make something else for me – I’m thinking a late lunch tunic.
Spent a bit of today binding a quilt and watching a craftsy class (which I fell asleep in front of). So not much sewing done today.
Hearty congrats to you Nicole! Really happy for you and Jed and it must be very exciting for the fab five also. The top looks spot on for a comfy maternity piece.

I’ve nearly finished the Colette Mable pencil skirt, only the hem to go which I’ll do in the morning, then the all important fit test!
I managed to cut this one out of 2 pairs of yoga pants I made myself that I wore until they went to holes in unfortunate places but the rest of the fabric was in good shape. Given this is now the second item of clothing from the exact same piece of fabric, I think it was a good buy π

That is a spectacular buy, Heidi! Excellent recycling.
I vow to sew nothing today, nothing. I hereby vow to clean up! Put stuff away, chase out the dust, clean my machine and iron before I start anything else. My sewing space/bedroom has completely disintegrated with Easter craziness. I was really good yesterday and mended some pants of mine and patched a hole in Charlie’s jeans. At ballet class today, I will work on the last few stitches in my Round Trip jacket lining. And this weekend coming, I need to finish a First Communion dress that got back burnered because of Easter. And I will continue to destash. Must be good! Must be good.
but…. baby girl does need some nightgowns. And I could use a spring skirt and a nice dress for P’s First Communion. And he needs a suit! And I have some Heather Ross strawberries that really need to be a cute spring dress……

I’m finally getting pictures up of the Easter outfits I made for my three youngest. Here is the art museum trousers and vest I made for my little man. I love how they turned out! https://www.flickr.com/photos/41419048@N03/13974475794/
I will definitely be sewing this pattern again come Christmas, I absolutely love it.
My serger decided to stop working about half way through the final Easter outfit, a needle broke and now the timing is off. The needles are hitting the lower looper and it’s beyond my “expertise” to fix it. I took it into the repair shop and they are backed up three weeks! I’m going to have to get creative with finishing seams. π

Oh skill testing time then crissybel. What alternative seam finish will you try first? This is a fab opportunity you know.
Heidi will you show us the skirt once done?
How long until P’s communion day Meleliza? Have you got heaps of time up the sleeve or only a little?

crissybell, I had the same thing happen to me two Christmas ago so I used French seams on everything, including five pairs of sleepover pj’s. It’s really a lovely finish.

The Mabel skirt fits straight out of the packet at 2X! I think this is the first time I have ever sewn something straight out off the pattern, I didn’t even add any length!
Tamara, I’ll get some pics next week once the guests have gone, by then I expect there may be at least one more version π
I’m planning to wear my first one all day today to check wearability π

justsewit, I had to get creative last summer when my old serger was out of commission and I hadn’t purchased the new one yet. during that time I used a clean finish edge, it’s so basic, but I really like the added topstiching on either side of the seam. you’re right, this is a great opportunity to learn something new. this time around I think I’ll try french seams, thank you for the inspiration to do so, mama_knowles!

I’ve finished the wedding cape based on the red Riding Hood Cape from LTTS! It looks lovley and I can’t wait to see it with the dress π
The Mable skirt is definitely a win, I’ve worn in all day. It’s fantastically comfortable and sits well without moving or twisting π

His communion is June 22, much later than all his classmates. So there’s time, but I’m going to see what the stores have before I even think about making a suit. Tailoring is a whole different set of skills and I think I’d rather not practice on something so important.
I did get stuff cleaned up yesterday, so we might do some quick and easy nightgowns today. I’m still looking for that holy grail of nightgown patterns that’s easy, comfortable and cute.

I’m going to try the pinwheel slip for summer nightgowns this year.

I am cutting out a Family Reunion Top tonight from a small scale floral seersucker, which I am hoping will work. My machine is back from the repair shop and I couldn’t be happier to see it working again!
meleliza, I have made nighties from this pattern https://www.flickr.com/photos/64920483@N03/12328470255/ and find it really quick, simple and pretty. It works for a woven or knit fabric.
