What are you sewing now?

Robin @Robin
I noticed the underpants on Thread Theory. Don’t know that I’ll be sewing those for my husband anytime soon, but I do love the coat. Hugo will look smashing.
Doing some comfort sewing today with the music box jumper out of quilting cotton.

Comfort sewing, how lovely. I might try that Robin.

Tamara I think that was Nicole’s whole point — when something looks straightforward and you’re very experienced, there can be a temptation to forge ahead the way you’re accustomed to doing things, and it’s easy to miss some little detail (like I know I often adhere the interfacing half an inch over from where it should be, forgetting that different plackets get folded differently). O+S stuff is not like Big 4 where there are a bunch of piece you fit together however you are most comfortable, there’s often a specific folding or shaping that’s specific to that particular garment.
Apologies if I misunderstood, Nicole.
Robin I agree! Comfort sounds so nice.

The Garden Party is next up on my sewing list, Nicole. I’ll be sure to pay special attention…sometimes I think I understand the instructions, but then when I actually have the fabric in my hands, I get a bit confused!

I haven’t made the dress yet, but have read the instructions (I’m sorry, Tamara – not sure I get your renaming of them to ‘destructions’- some patterns may have destructions, but certainly not O+S) – and there is one step which is counter-intuitive and easy to miss – I only picked it up as my wifi was down and so spent some time being way more thorough than usual in my reading of them.

“Destructions” would be pretty apt for a few things I have, LOL! But definitely not O+S 🙂

Ok! I mean nothing nasty or sinister when I refer to something as “destructions”. It is simply pick up slang from being around two very rural men for some fifteen years! They mean instructions and like Sarvi has just pointed out do exactly the opposite of pointing to them as reference thanks to either cockiness or over confidence at what they need to achieve, or forge ahead thinking they know the next step only to miss something subtle along the way – hence the word destruction, the instructions aren’t necessarily as destructive as the reader’s comprehension of them. And again that is not a point at ANYBODY!
To this I can exactly relate – and to Nicole’s meaning also – I do it ALL THE TIME! and sometimes muff too. We all do.
What I mean is that it doesn’t look at all muffed. It looks like your normal unmuffed sewing Nicole.
And once again I apologise. I have somehow lost the city sophistication of correct language and speech (and I am beginning to now wonder if I really had it in the first place). I keep forgetting that what I see as humour, others might not see the same way, no matter how close we seem to be in our common interest.
Oliver and s rock with their instructions. They are the best instructions ever for anyone to sew with experienced or otherwise. Just want to point that out!
I REALLY hope I cleared that up so no feeling are hurt etc.

It can be so hard to read tone over the internet, can’t it? I always worry how things will sound that I mean as jokey in my head. I tried to say something supportive to a friend the other day about how her figure has changed with pregnancy and I fear it came out sounding maybe a little too enthusiastic! Luckily she’s a close friend and knew me well enough to take it the right way 😉

I wory about that all the time, Sarvi. I type something that I think is funny or wry or tongue-in-cheek, but when I read over it I worry that it may look completely different to somebody who doesn’t know me or my personality, or can’t see my expression and tone of voice.
Tamara, I’ve heard little children call “instructions” “destructions” though, so I was pretty sure you were saying it humorously 🙂
I’m currently sewing a rather boring 100% poly dress for my youngest daughter. I bought the fabric several years ago and my tastes have changed since then, but she has been begging me to make it for awhile so……but thankfully it’s a fast sew because I’m using a very basic A-line pattern.

Phew! (Wiping the brow). I just want you all to know that I mean everything I type to come out with kindness and sincerity and support. It can be rather difficult to leave the emotions of the immediate surroundings in the offline world especially when facing challenges. I don’t blame you one bit for clarifying. it’s actually a good thing.
I have the second school dress waiting for me to set up the machines to fix its hem.
What I desperately want to do is sew but I am currently wading through my notions and trying to fit them into containers that will in turn fit in the cutting table.
The girls in this family need some clothes!
11 years ago LINKOK, I didn’t know that Thread Theory made a men’s boxer pattern but you guys, I might have to try this. My husband’s birthday is coming up and I think he would die laughing if he unwrapped a pair of handmade skivvies. I used to knit for him all the time but I have yet to sew anything for him. The question is – would he pose in them so I could post a photo on Flickr?

Sorry, I do live with preschoolers after all.

Now who needs emoticons? I am having a very good giggle over your post Masha! My hubby wouldn’t either. But then he would probably baulk at the idea of me making them in the first place!
That photo of your little fellow is just too precious btw. He is such a darling little boy!
I found all these half smocked dresses! I will have to find the other parts and make them up and then possibly hand them on (I need to identify the sizes).
Tonight I am still sorting but hopefully tomorrow I get to sew something, either for me or for Imogen who I have to measure – again! Sigh, that’s what happens when they grow.

Comfort sewing completed! But when will I learn to read the instructions on the easy patterns? Pinned the bodice to the skirt and had an 1 1/2″ left over. Helps if one reads the instructions and does the placket on side 2 of the skirt!
Rarely happens when I sew a complicated pattern.
I couldn’t get Rob to pose in a shirt I made for him so I’m guessing his under wear modelling career will not happen. : ) Not that I plan to make under pants.

I haven’t touched my machine in three weeks and I’m feeling twitchy! Now the question is what to sew when I do get a chance. I’m thinking something for me.
I’m totally making my husband boxers for Father’s Day. My girls are always asking why I don’t sew for Daddy and he jokes that he doesn’t like dresses. It might be a challenge to find the right fabric but I think he’d get a kick out of it. I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t model them but I definitely will ask 🙂

We might need to make an 18 & over page on flickr for the gents!
I’m in baby sewing limbo. People have different preferences in baby gear and I want to make sure everything will be well-received. I’ve actually rethought giving handmade to a few folks. Feeling less certain they’ll understand them as time, thought, and cost-intensive gifts. For now I’m ordering all the goodies, knitting away, and lining up fabrics and patterns and buttons. Hard work but fun work.
