New here? Introduce yourself!

Lol, that’s funny Patricia – I ‘discovered’ that Oliver is an Aussie just last week when a friend of mine asked me if I had heard of Oliver+S patterns – her husband is an Anglican minister, and they know the family (it was Oliver’s father who officiated at the signing of the First Fleet bible with Will & Kate – where his wife and daughter were wearing Lisette and Oliver+S)
10 years ago LINKvothgirl @vothgirlJustine, I saw photos of the First Fleet bible signing on Facebook – having majored in history at university, I loved the historical aspect of it. So very cool! And to see people I knew with the royals! 🙂
Of course now I want to go buy that Lisette pattern and have a go at it myself 😉
10 years ago LINKjay_1965vw @jay_1965vwI’ve been lurking for a few months, I thought I’d finally introduce myself.
I’m Jay, I am a mother of 2 girls, aged 26 months and nearly 4 months. I am from Melbourne, Australia, but for the past 3 years since I got married, I have lived in Canberra. My husband is in the defence force. We are posted to Washington DC at the end of this year.
I have been sewing since I was 7, and trained as a fashion designer. I worked in the industry for 9 years, but got burnt out by staying at the same firm for toooooooo long, so I retrained as a Primary School teacher (then couldn’t get full time work!). I’m now a SAHM, which is the best job I’ve ever had.
Although I can make my own patterns, I generally use commercial patterns to save time. I’m loving the O and S patterns, because I know they will always make sense to me. I’m currently using a pattern from another company and getting quite frustrated at some of the methods they use.
As well as sewing, I do a lot of knitting, and share a love of Volkswagens with my husband.
10 years ago LINKbren5kids @bren5kidsHi, and welcome! I am a VW Bug lover as well! I have never owned one tho’ and don’t see one in my near future. I currently drive a very un-cute 8 passenger Suburban, and a 9-passenger conversion van, and will probably do so until at least some of my 6 children have left the nest. I know exactly what I will get though when the time comes: a baby-blue (or possibly cream) convertible, preferably of the same vintage as myself, ’77. One can dream! 🙂
Brenda
10 years ago LINKjay_1965vw @jay_1965vwThanks for the welcome, Brenda! I have a 65 beetle that I restored to show standard, but I can’t drive him at the moment because he doesn’t have any baby bolts 🙁 One day when my kids have got big enough for booster seats that you use with a normal seat belt…
I used to have a ’75 twin cab kombi ute (same vintage as me!), but I’m currently driving a new Golf wagon – I think it’s called a Jetta Sports Wagon in the US. Very safe, and baby friendly, but I don’t get the same looks or comments as when I drive my beetle!
I like the sound of your baby blue convertible, it’s good to have a dream car!
10 years ago LINKneedlewoman @needlewomanHello Jay,
so nice to hear about you. One of my younger friends is currently posted in Canberra after 3 years in Florida on an “exchange” between the Australian and American defence forces. I realise that the prospect of packing up two small children, and yourself again by the end of this year is probably not much fun, but I do envy you going to Washington DC. A wonderful city, and so interesting. I was just a tourist for a couple of weeks, but a woman I grew up with, and the wife of an ABC journalist spent a few years there with her husband and children, and enjoyed it very much – although of course, she missed Australia, and her family here. PS: I love the look of Vdubs but the noise has always put me off – too many student days traveling in the vans, and in poorly serviced, and crowded ‘beetles’.
10 years ago LINKNicole @motherof5I had a Subaru ute when I was young and free. I loved it and would dearly like to buy another as a runabout.
Hugo is quite keen too, they stopped making them in 1990 so it will quite probably be a do up.

10 years ago LINKTagged by Stephanie @Tagged by StephanieHello everyone! I’m Stephanie and I live in San Diego. I’ve been sewing since I was 7 or so. I sewed a few dresses for myself in highschool. I feel like I really started learning to sew though in the last few years after getting an iPad and finding out the wealth of info online through so many different sewing blogs! Finding Oliver + S has just been icing to the cake! It is so awesome how we can post questions and gain feedback from those more experienced, those famous from their blogs 😉 and especially cool that Liesl herself answers our questions too!
10 years ago LINKNicole @motherof5Welcome Stephanie!
I know haw much my sewing has improved since using these patterns. Several of us want to print t-shirts with ‘What Would Liesl Do?’ printed on them.
Please, join in the conversations and make yourself at home.
10 years ago LINKvothgirl @vothgirlI’d seriously buy/sew one of those tshirts too, Nicole! 😉
10 years ago LINKNicole @motherof5Wouldn’t it be so cool?
10 years ago LINKEmilyG @EmilyGHello, I have been hanging out on Flickr from some time now (thepeahead), but never thought to come over here! I’m Emily. I am a mom to two girls and a boy, Ella (5.5) and Delilah (4) and Barrett (11 months). We live on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I’ve been sewing since I was a kid in 4H, but never really enjoyed it until I sewed my first Oliver and S pattern. I have learned so much and I feel like I know so much more about general garment construction since using these patterns.
Looking forward to chatting with you all and learning from you.
10 years ago LINKNicole @motherof5Hi Emily, (waves) I know you from Flickr!
I am so glad you popped in.
You are ‘most welcome’ as my youngest, Tildy would say!
10 years ago LINKEmilyG @EmilyGThanks Nicole. Tildy is such a cute little lady!
10 years ago LINKNCMimi @NCMimiHello, Just purchased my first Oliver + S pattern (the playtime dress and leggings) and can’t wait to make it! Have already purchased navy corduroy with tiny pink dots and it will be for my 14 month old granddaughter. I’ve been looking through the topics here and am just thrilled to have found this site. Loads of inspiration!! Moved to NC from NJ about a year ago and have been getting back into sewing because of the new little one. Started sewing about 45 years ago and loved making clothes for myself and my daughter. But haven’t done much sewing in the last 20 years….I ordered the paper pattern this time but plan on trying one of the digital patterns soon — possibly the little cape.
Looking forward to learning more and making lots of cute little outfits!
