I’ve cycled wearing mine – only a short distance (school commute) mind you and mine is a stretch pleather, but it was fine to ride in.

You can certainly line the skirt, but a lining and instructions for lining it are not included in the pattern because, after much debate, I decided to keep it simple. We’ll do a lined pencil skirt someday, but it was too difficult to include un-lined and lined in one pattern. I hope that helps, and when I did a lot of biking I also wore pencil skirts!

I was hesitant to buy the pencil skirt pattern because I bike to work, but a colleague of mine says she can bike in her pencil skirts. I’m excited to use the Extra Sharp Pencil Skirt to give it a try. Pencil skirts *are* extremely sharp looking!
In preparing, I’m curious to know more about the issue of lining. The pattern calls for an unlined…[Read more]

Btmom, you can make an adjustable waistband by using buttonhole elastic. I get mine at JoAnn’s. It’s not very sturdy so I use a piece with 4 or 5 buttonholes and sew it to the end of the measured skirt elastic. I sew a 5/8″ button to the inside of the waistband beside where the elastic emerges from the casing. Choose a buttonhole and push the…[Read more]

I’m making size 7 shorts as well. I cut the elastic at 21″ (Kid has a 23″ waist), butted ends together so no overlap. But when finished, the elastic length is not much less than the waisteband of the shorts, that there is barely any gathering, if that makes sense. I’m concerned about them staying up on him. It’s a surprise gift that will be…[Read more]

I saw that pattern piece but the instructions said to “sew basting stitches 1/2” from one long edge of the CUT packet piece. It never occurred to me that they were talking about anything but the CUT OFF packet piece. I’m too literal I suppose…but I’m like that when following instructions. Sorry about the above message.

There is a complete sew-along for this style if you need additional help:

The piece you cut off is not used for the placket. There is a separate wider, longer pattern piece, number 16.
Hope you have worked it out or see this in time.
Lisa.

I’m trying to make the Classic Shirt, View A and the instructions for the ‘Wearer’s Right Set-In Placket are more than confusing. It says trim 1-1/4″ from right front shirt edge, then sew a row of basting stitches 1/2″ from one long edge. Then I’m suppose to add 1″ x 29″ of interfacing using basting stitching as a guide. Then fold along…[Read more]

I suspect it must have something to do with the button plackets and how they fold back. Can you post a picture?

I am sewing the birthday party dress and i am having trouble with the hem facing. I understand how to attach it but even after i fold the edges back my facing is still shorter than the dress by about 2 inches. I have checked all of my seam allowances and made sure i cut out the right size on all the pieces. I managed to attach the front facing…[Read more]

Thank goodness you spotted that as it looks like you would have been missing quite a bit of width too, and had a very tight crotch seam! (Eek). Hope you can piece the fabric and make it work.

I was about to reprint the pattern to see if I could figure what went wrong when took a look thru the scraps and found 2 missing pattern pieces!!!
Thanks for your help. Now I hope I have enough scrap that I can add it to the back piece and keep sewing!

Oh Heidi, how frustrating, and how very odd….
I don’t have the digital pattern but have just got my paper pattern out to check:
the length of the inseam on the pattern piece from the crotch edge to the hem edge is 18cm / 7&1/8″ on both the front and back shorts and this is true for all sizes.
So, it’s not the case that you’ve accidentally traced…[Read more] -
