I’m making these for the first time and they are adorable! I was wondering why, when finishing the rise, we are instructed to clip the seam between the notches and simply press open the rest of the seam, rather than finish the entire seam (steps 7 & 8 of Assemble the Pants Panels)? I’m a new sewer, so I’m inquiring just for my own edification.…[Read more]

Hi Kate (@matuhart), I’ve just moved house and everything is in boxes, so I don’t have my book on hand. But…
There is a free felt bow pattern here on the Oliver + S website under the Free Patterns tab.
If you want to use your dress fabric, you can still use this pattern. I’ve sewn it in fabric by adding a 1/4″ seam allowance, stitching and…[Read more]

My daughter has specifically asked
me to make dress variation O (with the cat patch pocket), including the bow. I looked through the book and didn’t find any mention of how I could make the bow. Any suggestions where I could find this? I’m also wondering if the bow could be made removable without resorting to pins. Any ideas? Thanks!

Liesl Gibson replied to the topic Thoughts on using a large-scale print? in the forum liesl + co: chaval coat 4 years ago
Depending on the weight and thickness of the lining I think it could be great! Would love to see it when you’re done.

I ordered custom-printed canvas to make a long coat but I realized the pattern I had in mind has princess seams and all the pieced details of a trenchcoat. So now I am thinking the Chaval pattern instead will let the fabric shine — it is a large-scale anemone print in navy on natural color/beige ground. I’ll need to line it in something heavier…[Read more]

Thank you, Liesl. I do understand what you mean about the body map. Could you or one of the advisors take a look at the muslin fit so far and tell me what you see. I have been trying but not sure what I am seeing. This is Muslin #4 (size 8 D, grading to 14 at waist. There is no FBA as it seems to have ease now in chest. I did a full arm…[Read more]

For question 1 it very much depends on your arms. If you have fuller arms you may want to go with a larger size armhole. Otherwise start with the standard size and see how it goes with the muslin.
Regarding #2, I’m not a big believer in the body map concept because it’s not nearly as simple as the authors of the book try to make it. Each pattern…[Read more]

I think I’ve made it in knit with the placket and it wasn’t a problem, but it’s been a while. And I know several people have eliminated the placket without problems, too. There have been many versions of this pattern–you could check the Flickr group or the Facebook group and probably find lots of examples.

Hello!
I am making the playtime dress for the first time in knit fabric. I have made several in woven. Has anyone made one without the button placket in the back? I am thinking to either use the facing & just extend to the back (not down the button placket) or line the bodice. If I line the bodice I am worried that it will be too heavy. Maybe a…[Read more] -

#1. If I am starting from a size to fit my upper bust measurement and grading to larger size for waist and hips ( say size 6 D cup going to a 12 for waist and hips) and doing a full arm adjustment to add about 1.5 inches, do I need to adjust the armhole also? Or should I start with the armhole as is in the smaller size?
#2 Would the Bistro dress…[Read more]

Thank you! The thing I love about the pattern is its slouchiness, so I probably will leave it out. But, I’m just starting my muslin, so I have time to decide and maybe do a comparison mockup. My goal is to finish by December 1.
