In that case use the button markings and edge of buttonholes to create a vertical line that you’ll then match your pattern to.

Don’t forget that the buttons sit to the edge of the buttonhole, not the centre.

Sorry Shelley, I didn’t answer your question. Yes, I would like the plaid to match up (perfectly haha) when the cape is buttoned.

Hmmm. I just went back and checked the pattern (one I printed and taped together, and I’m not seeing a center notch for the front piece. There is one on the back piece!

Thank you Shelley! That makes perfect sense. I even used tracing paper, I probably just didn’t transfer that marking – making it it extra difficult for myself. My husband voted to leave it as it is, but I think I can manage to cut the pieces again.

Do you want it to match when it’s buttoned closed?

You need to mark the centre front on each pattern piece as a vertical line. I think there’s a notch at the neck line to indicate where this is from memory.
Then, when you cut, you make sure the centre front lines hit the same part of the plaid pattern, not the edge of the pattern piece.

Figured out what the problem was, I increased the yoke size in height at the shoulder but did not increase the neckline so thought the collar portion would be ok, it wasn’t. Had to recut the yoke, works fine now. Thank you for your help.

Here’s how I troubleshoot this kind of problem:
1: notches missing or not matching at all?
– I’m trying to attach something upside down
2: centre back and shoulder notches good, one front ok, but all the length missing on the other side?

For your first question, I think the cut-on placket is a little easier than the set-in placket, although neither is really difficult. I think the main difference is that the cut-on placket is more formal-looking, and the set-in placket is more casual/matches the option for extra topstitching lines. Pages 182 and 183 of The Palmer Pletsch Complete Guide to Fitting (2018) addresses this and directs you to add length to front yoke in two places.

You might try Farmhouse Fabrics – they have a wide button selection, and at least in their MOP buttons have a range of sizes, including the small cuff placket size (I’ve ordered buttons from them for a Classic Shirt).
