I’m making sailor suits from my own pattern and trying to decide if the collar piece should be made out of a single thickness or a double thickness. I’m planning to edge it in bias tape as part of the stripes pattern.
The fabric is a nice heavy sateen cotton with a tiny bit of stretch.
Thoughts on how to decide single vs double? Pictures show…[Read more]

can i ask you all for some more help?
i have the vouge coat and am stumped on the collar. its hard to see in the photo but the collar itself doesnt come all the way to the edge of the jacket, it has a separate piece that buttons on each side that closes the gap. I woudl rather have just the collar coming to the edge of the jacket, but can i…[Read more]

i have similarly large headed kids (15th percentile height/weight, over 98th for head size) and never had a problem with the hood fitting (and i need to tailor their polo shirts because they dont fit over their heads).

I wore them growing up!
I got pairs for my boys this year, one of the newer styles that has adjustable buckles over the toes as well which seemed like it helped with fit, they are pretty wide.
I found they ran a bit large compared to other shoes -

Thank you so much!!!
These are all some great options and it’s so helpful to see the variations
I think I’m going to get the vouge pattern and lengthen the collar, and raise the waist seam and add the pleat.
Sadly my fabric store doesn’t have the new patterns in so I have some time to scheme -

I lost my beloved coat last winter (sad but it was 9 years old and on its last leg, I wouldn’t havr been able to give it up otherwise).
I would like to make one like it, it was like these, my favorite parts were the stand up collar, the dress like shape under the seam, and the tailored upper part
Does anyone know of a pattern like this or a few…[Read more]

Thanks!!

I’m trying to figure out a good pattern to start with to make something like these

Although maybe the art museum would be better?
Any thoughts on the front bib? Looks like something made of two pieces stitched right side together on 3 sides and turned and then attached to short fronts in…[Read more]

Thanks for all the great tips!
I will be sure to check sizing in this case, they also look quite short 🙂 The pattern I got is technically one size up so hoping it will be a good fit.
Its dangerous what one can find on Etsy easily now. Especially wiht O+S as a gateway to vintage patterns

if this ever arrives in the post i will have enough to make a few things – its a lightweight cord with a fairly large print (http://cloud9fabrics.com/fabrics/small-world/)
I was thinking maybe the teaparty playsuit with the mod of connecting the top and bottom to remove the extra seam. other ideas for boys?

i sew for my kids for me, though lately they are excited about what i’m making, the main reason i do it is its a creative outlet i enjoy and i like seeing them dressed in the finished product.
and i absolutely treasure the handmade (mostly knit) items my parents saved that my grandmother made for me, it is so special to be able to dress my boys…[Read more]

Thanks for all the tips.
In the meantime now someone in the house was trying to be helpful with the laundry and put it in the wash and dryer, so I guess that is done 🙂 The good news is it shrunk only a tiny bit so it still fits the smaller one just fine. And it did seem to soften up.
