  • I have not made the Apple Picking Dress but I did add a Peter Pan collar to the Family Reunion dress. I did not need to add any length to the collar to accommodate for thicker fabric, but there was some tricky math. I wrote a tutorial for the Oliver+S blog which you can find here:…[Read more]

On my fabric sits the cat
And there’s nothing wrong with that
    She protects it, you see
    ‘Cept sometimes when she pees

Was feeling a bit off today so I sat the kids in front of the TV and retreated to the basement. Finished the boy’s sleepsack (just in time, it got cold again tonight) and sewed him a new pair of LTTS mittens out of the remaining fleece. My sewjo may be coming back!

(BTW, my autocorrect tried to change “sewjo” to “sewage.”)

There once was a quilter named Lizzy
But quilting was making her dizzy
So she looked for a dress
    She could sew to impress
But the prints she had all were too busy

    Next limerick:

My sewing machine’s on the fritz

Getting back into the sewing groove finally, though it’s hard to force myself down into the basement to do so (no windows there). I just finished up the birthday princess dress marathon. Sadly, I have really grown to despise sewing princess dresses.

I have had a Playtime dress cut out for older DD for ages but it sits, unseen. Got 90 percent…[Read more]

Since we’ve moved, I’m in the basement (windowless, sob) too, Cybele. I find that I sew much less 🙁 Part of it is that I do have a great deal less time to sew than I used to, and part of it is that I hate being in a windowless space. I have grand plans to hang some tapestries on the walls and decorate the exposed beam ceiling with twinkle…[Read more]

  • That dress (the cap-sleeve version) looks very much like my wedding dress! Which I bought on eBay, ha. I love that tip about the flannel sheet on the cutting mat – I am so doing that in the future.
Janice, I think you could absolutely do it if you and she decide that is what you want. How exciting!

  • I am wondering what could be done to improve the search function? I just searched for the Fabric Scrooge thread using the forum search box – I typed it in several different ways, in quotation marks, without quotation marks, and it wouldn’t come up at all. I was able to find it easily by typing “Oliver+S fabric scrooge” into Google so it’s not…[Read more]

  • I had 21 inches of 56″ wide twill, out of which I was determined to make a pair of Field Trip cargos for my son. I managed to cut all the 18-24 month pieces out of that fabric except for the cargo pockets themselves (and the waistband facing which I would have used a lighter fabric for anyway). He’s 1 – I figure he doesn’t need the cargo pockets anyway.

  • One more thing – if you buy the press you will later be able to put in metal snaps too – the pliers only work with resin.
mkhs, do you find the sew-in snaps stay put ok? My grandmother always used to use them on the close she sewed for us and they were durable – but whenever I’ve done them, they seem so loose! I must not be sewing them properly.

  • OK – another question because I am just finally somewhere where I can see a wide variety of fabrics in person. Velveteen is cotton velvet, right? I’m talking about a drapey stretch velvet that is polyester. I do prefer natural fabrics in general but as this is a special occasion dress I told myself I wouldn’t mind if she didn’t wear them for…[Read more]
