I am sorry you are sad Roxy.
If you look at the picture on the pattern packet, the shirt is untucked and only just reaches the waistband, thus the style.

If you want to tuck, it does need some length added. -

The sleeve cap is not that gathered but I can understand what you mean by then looking ‘poofy’.
I would consider narrowing the sleeves down to the sleeve hem, tapering them, but I probably would leave the sleeve cap be. -

I have made both tops but it would be beyond me to do an ‘easy’ tute to swop them over.
I am not sayings its not do-able, I am just don’t think it would be a simple task. -

I made the size 10 for one of my daughters and there is 42” (approx) of fullness through the waist.
