I’m not sewing anything at the moment, as I’m washing winter blankets at the laundromat. It’s very peaceful and quiet here, and I’m very excited about getting the blankets so clean – our washer at home is too small to do a good job. Either that or our blankets are too big. I’ve been taking a class this month so when I get home, I’m going to baste…[Read more]

I don’t know if she would go for the bistro, but I might!

I’m working on a music class blouse for my 9yo. I didn’t realize when I started – I was thinking about semi-formal recitals – but she’ll be wearing it to my dad’s memorial service at the end of August. It’s a celebration of life, so florals are fine. So now I’m trying to figure out what my 15yo will wear. Probably something off-the-rack, but I…[Read more]

I’m cautious about bra straps at work, but not at home. Spaghetti straps and racer backs are both pretty casual for me.

  • The Sewaholic Granville women’s shirt.

I can’t actually say it’s the hardest thing I’ve ever sewn, because I’m not finished yet.

It’s been an epic journey in fitting, tweaking, adjusting, discoveries about the idiosyncracies of my armscye, and more tweaking and fitting.

It’s close to a year, now. I need to hem it and add buttonholes, and…[Read more]

It was awesome! I know how to do some things with a laser cutter now, and while I don’t feel I’m super-experienced, I’m at a point where my experiments will be meaningful, and not just random stabs at finding the power button.

I think that, in MOST circumstances, I will be downloading open source files instead of drawing my own. Graphic design is not my forte! And I might for tomorrow as well if I can find something simple.

We are using LaserCut, and it is a pain in the rear. Thus far, the guys have only tried drawing things IN the driver, which they admit is…[Read more]

Enbee, that’s so helpful! I’ve been trying to wring information out of people who, as of yesterday, hadn’t yet figured out the vector graphics part.

I would also love to use a laser cutter for pattern pieces.

I have an appointment at a place that says they can teach me this on Friday. I have to pay them money, which doesn’t thrill me, but…[Read more]

This may be a shot in the dark, but I need to seek advice in a woman-friendly space.

I need to learn how to use a laser cutter. The model in question is a Rabbit QX-1290, if that means anything to anyone. I have access to one and I know it has potential for cutting Tyvek and leather, and I hear even fabric, and I think it could be amazing, but…[Read more]

He is expected to! But it’s open heart surgery, so he’s reeling.

The least I can do is make him some fabulous Jim-jams to reel in.

  • EllenMCM replied to the topic Pajama emergency in the forum off topic 8 years ago

    Thanks so much Tamara!

I like that the McCall’s pattern is printable, but the fit looks really baggy. I like the looks of the Vogue one better. Which is ridiculous, because it’s pajamas.

    Maybe a little overstated, but . . .

A good friend is facing very serious surgery, and he wants button front pajamas (the button-front will be needed for medical reasons). I’m looking for pattern recommendations.

Also, he has a print he likes from Spoonflower. I don’t have any experience with their substrates. I’d love advice on what would be…[Read more]

  • That is devastating about the Secret Agent trench, because I have that pattern and I love it! It’s such a satisfying, easy sew. We need a Secret Agent outreach project!

  • Hooray!

I love this skirt – the pockets and the pleats make it special, but it’s a great, quick sew.

  • Yes. You might have to do some unpicking. Did that fix it?

  • OK, that us a bad ASCII drawing. The lines are supposed to be the same width apart as the “seams”

  • OK, we’re talking about pattern piece 12 here. It’s narrower at the top than at the bottom, and it has some notches on the sides.

    I usually ignore the dots.

First – did you trace the right size?
Next – is the piece right-side up (slightly narrower bit at the top)?

When I do this, I press and pin the pleats first (I’m fussy), then I put my…[Read more]

  • OK, looking at the instructions now.

If I am recalling this correctly, the pocket doesnt go all the way to the bottom of the side panel. It goes part way. Which makes sense, because if you have a lucky frog or a violin rosin in your skirt pocket, you don’t want to be bending over to fetch it from just above your knee. It also reduces bulk in the…[Read more]

  • I can dig out my instructions in a minute here. First, tell me what does the pocket plus pleated insert seem too short for?

I’ve been meaning to sew up another of these. Maybe I will trace out the pattern in size 8 and follow along . . .
