haha not entirely altruistic! i like having an excuse to learn new crafty things and don’t often back down from a challenge. It started a few years ago; I was late signing dd up for recital and said that I’d take any extra costume they had and make it fit… from there they asked me to make 15 little Red Riding Hoods, then 6 Salt n Pepa silver…[Read more]

What a huge effort, you are doing them a massive favour. How kind of you.

Much more relaxing then my threading method….which involves tweezers, me swearing a lot and the children advising each other to stay away from mum.

I had an annoying afternoon and thought I’d relax for a few minutes and watch a video on using my serger. This might have been … too relaxing.

thank you! To learn, just like with most things, I googled some tutorials and bugged the people at the art store! For this, since the shapes were big and geometric, and one color, it was pretty easy. I made stencils out of stencil plastic and mixed my own custom color paint — i’m not up to the fooling around with diazo emulsion/light-developed…[Read more]

Create, that is beautiful. I think I shall focus on sewing being more about creating, then working.

@vothgirl, Hugo has printed me up a ‘rota’ that everyone fills in. The Twins change their minds a lot before I get to them but that is have the fun. Once it is cut, that is it.
I finally finished my cousins dress. It is beautiful and if I have fitted the muslin correctly, should fit like a glove.
It was a lot of work though. Lots of pieces,…[Read more] -

Rubber backed curtain fabric with washers sewn in the hem makes a very effective block out. Often curtain making shops will have remnants.
@kgiff, you will be very popular with the school. I have 27 drawstring bags to sew for the 2/3’s. The teacher wants to sort the skipping ropes.

Have you tried the fold in half, fold in the edges to meet and fold press then topstitch, to make roulette?
Or use a similar colour in a lighter fabric. My hair ties did not work well.
I used webbing on this one http://fiveandcounting-motherof5.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/kindy-days.html
Good luck, I loved sewing this one.

Has anyone ever been able to turn a fabric tube of fine whale corduroy for the button loops for this dress? I’ve tried everything, but it’s too thick. I’m swapping hair elastic a instead!

I bought really cheap blackout curtains at Walmart a couple years ago for my older daughter’s nursery. Not terribly attractive, but lightweight and pretty effective – and cheap! I think each curtain was about $8. Two years and a cross-country move (and one more child!) later, they don’t fit the windows in the house we have now. I cut up one of the…[Read more]

I’m thinking I’m going to give @motherof5 ‘s rota system a try this year – I picked up quite a few Thread Theory patterns during their New Years sale (the wardrobe builder set – Strathcona henley, Jedediah pants, and Newcastle cardigan – and the Camas blouse for me), so together with Liesl’s new patterns, there’s quite a lot of sewing I can now do…[Read more]

Thanks ladies! I was wondering about the durability of blackout fabric. I was assuming since it was just a liner it would not be very durable, but I guess I was mistaken. Very good information!
