Having serious social media withdrawal here – my Ipad is in Ipad icu!
I have almost finished two Jumprope dresses. I have failed three times on making a tailored shirt – fabric mismatched, wonkiness in seams something else went totally askew – I will try again and this time IT. WILL. WORK!!
I have rediscovered why I don’t sew with rayon!

I totally lost my mojo. School starts tomorrow and as we were preparing for it this weekend- doing laundry, checking for fit, cleaning, etc. My daughter and I were discussing first day outfits. Because first day!
She said she wanted to wear a dress that I had made. I promptly vetoed that because it was the dress I made for her last year and…[Read more]

I love the hopscotch variation, it looks great.
I’ve just started doing some sewing for me. I started softly with a willow tank top and dress. I am so proud if myself! I want to make more for myself but I’m struggling with what I like v what might actually suit me. I don’t want to invest time in something which I then won’t wear. I’m not sure…[Read more]

Thanks @reeni – very helpful info. I’ll use the Purl Soho one then, and will make a cardboard pressing tool as well. I’m going to use cotton lawn for my first attempt. I’m hoping for the best!

From a technical standpoint, all of these methods would work. But I’d advise against the method shown in the last link (Sew Liberated), which could really throw off everything about the trousers. Better to raise the center-back rise!

So I went to Amazon to do some sniffing around and am SO DARN EXCITED about your book. Can you offer pre-order on your website. I would rather you make the profit! It is your labor after all.
PS. Did you know that author’s get a greater cut on ebooks than they do paper? A friend of mine is a NYT bestseller. And that’s how I learned that.

I sewed a tie (as opposed to bowties, and knitted one 5 years ago — very Mad Men/ 80’s britpop!) as part of my son’s uniform — what they call “full uniform” for Mass days. I riffed off the Purl tutorial, adding a fun bright orange lining to offset the boring required navy outer, and changing the order of steps a little so I could machine-sew…[Read more]

My husband has put in a request for some new ties. (He went from working from home in t-shirts and shorts to a job where he actually needs a jacket and tie.)
Has anyone actually made one? There are a couple of tutorials that I’ve been checking out – one from Purl Soho and the other from Thread Theory. I’d love advice if anyone has actually…[Read more]

I finished a Cashmerette Appleton for my friend but I didn’t check the stretch requirements so it’s too tight through the back and bicep 🙁 I’m going to remove the sleeves and hopefully save the dress.
I also upcycled a friend’s t-shirt for his boy. I added a crossover yoke, inspired by the Hopscotch top as there wasn’t enough fabric. I really…[Read more] -

Whoops! I forgot to mention that if you did the slash and spread method, you’ll need to even out both seams as the side seam will be effected slightly.
Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

Hi Rebecca
This is what I do for my daughters’ pants and also my own.
Firstly I measure from the back centre waist to the inside of the leg where the seam would meet. You can also do this with a pair of pants that already fit her.
Then, because you want to fit only the back not the front, I would calculate the difference between the measurement…[Read more]

Oh, yes — and if it’s a size 5 in front, she says “the front is too dangly!!” meaning, she pushes the waist to where it’s comfortable, which pushes the pants/shorts crotch really low down.
If I make a size 4, front is *perfect* (and width/length!), but the back doesn’t cover the necessary bits. :/ And then she’s walking around, always trying to…[Read more]

My daughter has a long torso, which poses a problem when making pants… Height-wise, she is 44″ (size 5, in O&S size chart), however her waist/hip width and leg length is a 4. So, a size 4 is right, except for the rise…
So, because of her long torso, it makes the top-back of pants not high enough (not covering her bits). The front, however is the…[Read more]
