Looks like you did it perfectly! A boxy dress with dropped shoulder is going to have a boxy fit. Thus the lines. It’s normal for this style. The dress looks great on you!

That’s the right photo, @joslyn. You can see the full worksheet for the dress on page 20, including a sketch of the skirt on that particular dress–it’s added to an empire waist in this instance.

Thanks for your help. I am making a Christmas dress for my daughter. I plan to use the flared a-line silhouette with a fully lined bodice and skirt. I am thinking of adding a short layer of ruffled organza to the outside layer of the lining. Does anyone have any experience doing this – and any advice?

Hi
I am loving your book! I am in the planning stages of my daughters Christmas dress and I am looking at page 89- flared skirt with princess seams. I think the photograph that is included is the wrong one. In my book it is the blue dress with a navy polka dot yoke and ruffled cap sleeves. Can you tell me which picture is supposed to go there?
Thanks -

I extended the length of the bento tee to make a dress. I also narrowed the sleeves at the side seams.
1)Is there a better way to narrow the sleeves?
2)Is it possible to do something about these drag lines and maintain the boxy look or am I asking too much?

@rleibman I love everything about this question!!!
If I’m right, you’re a bloke, making a quilted Star Trek jumpsuit?! Damn, that’s a high five right there!
The tutorial is great. I’ve never read a sewing tutorial written for men and the walking foot hamburger analogy is fantastic!
Anyway, to answer your question… Yes, they intend for you to use…[Read more] -

Stupid question on an old thread. I’m trying to follow this tutorial (https://ds9nemjumpsuit.blogspot.com/p/tutorial.html)
On section 2, it says:
“Once quilted, serge the entire quilted assembly.”
I’m new to serging (just got one) though I’ve gone through a few online classes and videos on it, so I’m familiar with what the machine does.
Does the…[Read more] -

It’s not an option written into the pattern as it requires redrafting the front panels.
You can either make it a single, non overlapping closure with a zipper, or insert a zipper into the underlying facing and keep the buttons over the top.
Deb describes and shows the second option very well on her blog. Link :…[Read more] -

Does this coat have a zipper option or has anyone put one in?

So, I have done this for this pattern. My daughter’s chest and waist size put her in a 18/24 size. However, She was a 2/3 in length. I made the bodice in the 18/24 size and added length to the skirt and arms so that they corresponded to the right length. Here it is:

Thanks for that tip! I’m pretty new to sewing and am strangely much more comfortable drafting my own pattern than working with professional patterns. It’s partly because my kids are super skinny and need a lot of modification from standard patterns. Love these Oliver patterns but hesitant about the modifications I’d need to make. Maybe I’ll look…[Read more]

I haven’t made this dress, but I have adjusted a couple of patterns for my son when the weight and height didn’t line up for a single size (although he tends to go in the other direction – he’s got short legs). What I’ve done is to trace the width for one size and the height for another, connecting the lines where necessary. I’ve read on here that…[Read more]

My almost 2 yo daughter is size 18-24 months in height, but her weight is within the 12-18 months size. I’ve been hovering over the Playtime pattern for months, but would really like to know first if it’s possible to adjust to make the bodice smaller. I’d like the dress to be more fitted rather than loose, even if it means it won’t last long as she grows.

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoHi Deanna
There are some really great classes on Craftsy involving fitting. I have particularly found the classes by Joi Mahon helpful. The reason for this is that even though I have a dressmaker’s dummy to pin my Muslims onto, it doesn’t look like me and of course because of this it turns out totally wrong and fits the dummy not myself.
Joi…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoSo, I am such a novice when it comes to fitting myself. I find myself getting so overwhelmed when I make a muslin that I end up chucking it for a while and making something for the kids instead. I have a couple of fitting books, but where is the best place to post pictures and get input from other sewers? Are there really helpful crafty classes…[Read more]
