Hi @pegalot
The instructions for finishing the bell sleeve are on page 3. There are detailed steps there that show how the sleeve is finished using the sleeve facing. -

For two days I’ve been puzzling over how to finish the bell sleeve hem. Is is simply a 1/4 inch turned twice and topstitched? I’ve zoomed in on blog posts and can’t tell if this is how it was done.
I’m returning to sewing after nearly 40 years and can usually figure things out, but I am baffled.

Hi there, I would be inclined to make the change at the underarm part just because it’s easy, but it might depend on what you need.

I am about to begin sewing a Yanaka Jacket in a lovely brocade. I expect that I will need to alter for my bicep. Should I do this in the underarm area of the gusset and the back part of the top sleeve?

Thanks for the speedy response! I ended up cutting two copies of the shelf bra portion of the pattern and finishing the steps to assemble the cami. I couldn’t quite wrap my brain around how to encase the elastic and finish it, but it worked out to stitch the chest elastic to the outside so it’s exposed like a sports bra.

It should be fine at 1/2″, no worries!

I saw a faux suede trim at Mokuba in Paris a few weeks ago. I´m sure they have it in the New York store as well–you could call and ask them about it. It seemed perfect for this purpose, to me.

Interesting idea! I wonder if you could make it two layers with encased elastic between the two layers to finish the bottom edge? In my mind I can engineer it but… I think it would be quite easy to sew, actually!

I love the Tribeca Cami pattern! Has anyone converted it into just a bra? I think it would be very comfortable, but I’m not sure what to do with the top layer of fabric.

Thank you for your response. I’ve purchased a boucle fleece and will look for ultra suede. When it is done, I will post a picture.
