Nicole, is it possible to have a set of links in the sidebar of your blog to all of your tutorials? They’re such a useful resource, it would be so nice to have them all collected in one easy-to-browse spot. I basically search your blog first because I know it’ll be like a ‘practice run’ through making the pattern but sometimes I have to dig a…[Read more]

The actual seam should be sewn 1/2″. I won’t lie, I just pinned mine like mad and didn’t do the basting stitching. I did ckeck to make sure everything was in place right first before I moved on. Hope this helps!

I just might do that in order to actually get the prints I’m after.
I had the sales assistant bag the range saying she couldn’t understand why people loved it so much. I set her straight in explaining why.
Will go mail ordering when hubby isn’t looking and get that ones I want. -

Don’t forget the mail order option. It can take a week but they hunt around and find it all for you!
Well worth the 7$ p&h. -

Bit disappointed to find my store didn’t have all the prints and fabrics available. Apparently there was a split shipment. Oh well will try again next time.

I’m bumping this thread rather than starting a new one, because of the photos posted above. If I want to add a sheer fabric at the bottom edge of the skirt, which will extend below it, so it looks like a double layer, how best would I do that? I was thinking at first of inserting my sheer fabric between the hem and the hem facing, where the pink…[Read more]

Violaisabelle replied to the topic When do you Serge? in the forum off topic 14 years ago
It all depends for me as well. Type of fabric, seams needing to be open or pressed to one side will dictate what I do first. I use a combination.
And, I too serge after clipping my seams, I thought I was cheating by doing that until one day when I noticed in a RTW garment they had tone the same thing! 🙂 Nice to know we are all in good company.…[Read more] -

It kind of depends. If I’m sewing a seam that I want to lie flat ie. press it open, I will serge both sides before I sew the seam; such as a shoulder seam, or a seam down the back of a skirt or dress that has an invisible zipper inserted in it. But if it is a seam that will get ironed to one side, such as an armhole, I will sew the seam first,…[Read more]

Thanks, meleliza. I made the dress out of cotton yesterday and constructed the unlined sleeves. I would do the lining as described in thread magazine except I don’t need to line the cuff. The sleeves are completely put together, including the cuff, and then set into the armholes. I think I will constuct 2 sleeves (the lining and the dress sleeve),…[Read more]

I don’t have the instructions in front of me, but could you sew a second dress in your lining fabric? Machine stitch them together at the neck, hand stitch them together at the back zip and at the sleeve cuff and finish the hems separately? Here’s a good article from threads: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/4971/a-shortcut-to-great-linings

Mother of 5, do you mean put the sleeve lining (which already has the long seam sewn so it is a long tube) into the sleeve (which is also already sewn) , with wrong sides together , attach the cuff, wrapping the cuff around the two layers of fabric, and then attach the lined sleeve at the armhole as if it is one piece of fabric. Then bind the…[Read more]
