Lightning McStitch replied to the topic French seams in the Music Class blouse in the forum oliver + s: music class 12 years ago
I thought about this as I made one just recently. I think it would simply get too thick at the side where the two front (or two back) panels are joined, and then sewn into a frenched side seam. It would have to be very light weight fabric as Nicole said.

Lightning McStitch replied to the topic Twin Needle hemming – bobbin thread breaks in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 12 years ago
Thanks everyone. I think I probably do need to play with the tension a bit as sometimes the bobbin thread looks a bit straight and isn’t zigzagging between the top threads enough. after all that’s what gives the stitch its stretch, right?
Some tougher bobbin thread appeals too. It seems Maxi Lock thread is a brand of woolly nylon, as Liesl…[Read more] -

If you were sewing with a super fine fabric it may work but there are a lot of seams and the front and back yoke are not lined.
I made a Family Reunion dress, for a sweet friend who adores a perfect inside finish, and I used french seams for the sides and then bound the arm hole sleeve. Personally, I felt that looked a little ‘stiff’ and that was…[Read more] -

I am with Jane.
Unless it is a formal or paid garment I pin and sew slowly. -
Jane replied to the topic Adding Piping in the forum oliver + s: sleepover 12 years ago
I am lazy and don’t want to sew something twice, so I use Wonder Tape to hold the piping in place while I stitch the facing (or whatever) to the front piece (or whatever piece I am attaching it to). Works great!

Thanks Tamara, I think that is what I need to do is sew on the piping to the shirt facing before I fold it over. I couldn’t get there with my own brain. I appreciate it.
Thanks Sherry.. I will check out your link. -

You can add piping just about anywhere. It is mostly seen on collars but yes you can certainly add it to cuffs and the facing of your pj top.
This is what I do to sew it on (and yes I have a piping foot). Firstly with such a large length as the facing, I pin the piping to the edge I want to stitch it on to. Then I go along with a normal sized…[Read more] -

This may sound daft (but I’ve done it), are you sure you haven’t rotated the bottom pants piece by 90degrees…..

I wanted to report back that the badminton shorts make a fine substitute for bloomers. I lengthened the legs by 1″, changed the back waistband to sew up like Class Picnic shorts, and finished the bottom of the waistband with a bias strip. I made them to go with a Tea Party sundress, and they’re great for my active 3yo. I sewed them up in lawn, so…[Read more]

I used pinwale from Spotlight Heidi. It will turn out about the same weight as if using drill so not a winter coat for warmth but it will still look great.

Thanks for the feedback. Did you make it from pinwale or regular cord, Tamara? Yay, all cord’s on special at Spotlight!

I don’t know about “older” exactly, but my 2 1/2 yo is already growing out of size 3. So I imagine we’ve got a few years of bloomers ahead of us but we’ve long grown out of the tea party pattern I have. If she’s anything like her brothers, even the large size tea party wouldn’t last for us for long. So I guess a 12 year old may not want them, but…[Read more]

Nicole, I watched it on the computer. I don’t think it is broadcast here in Virginia. I loved watching it. I agree about the time constraints, I could never complete anything in the amount of time they had. I think the winner would have won even if it was not timed, though.

I think what I like most about it is that it’s such a good-natured sort of competition. No fake drama. At least, not what I have seen!

You know, when I saw the pocket that Lauren put on her dress I thought, “hmm.. I wonder if she got that idea from an Oliver & S pattern”.
I also wish they wouldn’t rush the contestants so. The ability to complete a project quickly does not mean you are a good seamstress. I know alot of people who can sew a dress much faster than myself, but I…[Read more] - Load More
