which magnetic snaps are people using? I see there are kinds that have 4 loops on the ends to sew in, but then also ones with a washer and metal parts you bend.
I’m planning on using them on a boiled wool fabric. Any tips??
Thanks!! -

Would the City Weekend knits be suitable for leggings? I was hoping to make them out of something that won’t sag at the knees. How is the recovery on that fabric?

How about a thread to post links to something we are particularly proud of?
I love links as I find the new Flickr quite hard to load with my country internet.
I am happy to go first.
I made a Secret Agent trench coat from a fabric that was far out of my usual choice and I love the…[Read more] -

I used magnetic sew in snaps when I made mine. I put them on the tabs, but when I make the next one, I plan to omit the tabs. I might just have it button.
I’m still planning. I bought wool/poly blend coating since Fabric.com has a lot on sale. -

Keep in mind that 25% stretch is not very much! Cotton jersey will work just fine. Something with a TINY bit of lycra/spandex will have better recovery, but you don’t want a power stretch. We’re not making swimsuits here! I made S’s leggings with ordinary cotton jersey, so don’t worry too much about getting fancy with these. Dry Goods had a nice…[Read more]

I have been holding on to this pattern for almost 2.5 years and figured this was the year I was going to make my little boy a coat and put this intimidation behind me.
Thanks for the tips everyone posted here. It was helpful.

I have mostly knits in my “collection”, which is vast! and I have to recommend Nature’s fabrics as having “bend-over-backwards” for you customer service, she will work to find what you need (she has a rare assortment of wool for those who love natural fibers and euro knits without the outrageous international shipping!) and Jeanne is a lovely…[Read more]

No idea. I just remember looking at the threads when I was looking for the invisible stuff Mother of 5 recommended for using in the overlocker and spying a product called Woolly Nylon and having no idea what it was for.

I use french seams for the inside of kids’ clothes whenever I can get away with it. And certainly for anything that frays very badly. The trick I find is to make sure you trim your first seam to 1/8″ after sewing. I use my rotary cutter and ruler to line it up, and then sew the final seam with a scant 1/4″. This seems to work well, even when two…[Read more]

I’m still mulling over how to get a clean finish on the inside of this thing. Dd chose a linen shirting that is going to fray like crazy.

Look for the Maxi lock STRETCH! It gives a little so the thread isn’t as likely to break 🙂

If you enjoyed the format of this show and enjoy baking, the original show The Great British Bake Off starts a new series tonight. It’s great, with the same pleasantness between the contestants. Apologies for taking this off on a non-sewing tangent!
