Can you replace the buttons on the back of the dress and use a zipper instead? I did this on the music class, but not sure about this one. I assume I would follow the same process of figuring out the allowance for the placket and then adding back in the allowance for the zipper?
Can’t wait to try this one, and since it will be an 8, might be…[Read more]

Cellisttoo started the topic Lengthening in the forum oliver + s: music box 11 years ago
I made the music box (view B – no pleats) in a size 6 around and 7 length. It really fits well over all, but I notice it is slightly tight around the arms (my daughter hasn’t complained, but I notice it when I zip it). I only lengthened the skirt. I wonder if it would work better to also lengthen the top portion? If so, where do you add the…[Read more]

I love the pocket flaps, but it would be even cooler to have REAL pockets underneath them (especially for the school uniforms I am making). Anyone ever done this? Would I use welt pockets???
On an unrelated note, if anyone is ever in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, check out SR Harris fabrics. I have never seen anything like it! Picked up some…[Read more]

BeckyinFL replied to the topic Pattern storage? Ideas please! in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 11 years ago
I’ll weigh in, even though I’m a relative newcomer around here. I have about a dozen Oliver + S patterns now. Some are digital downloads, and some are paper patterns that came through the mail. It has taken me a while to work out a tracing and storage system.
Digital downloads are the bulkiest. I print it all out on premium printer paper, then I…[Read more]

I bought at the container store and they have been great. I use three for the actual patterns, two for oliver + s (pictured) and one for others.
For the tracings, each time I do a new size/pattern I give it its own 4 by 6 envelope and label it (with my label maker) with pattern, size, and pattern company. These are stored in a forth box.

I have just finished the hems of three lullaby layette shirts. Just have to apply poppers and then take photos.
Next is… Whatever I pick out of the tray. Probably some very cute looking linen layette pants.
If I get the date we want, it mean there will be four weeks to go.

Thanks for the nice comments!
I wanted to add here that I found a blog post about how to draft a flat collar as well as a collar that stands up a little big. It’s good: http://www.myinnocentia.com/2010/12/technique-tuesday-drafting-your-own.html
Here’s another link with some tips and a free collar pattern:…[Read more]

@todd I, for one, find the behind the scenes info fascinating! Sounds like S is built a lot like my oldest. That’s part of the reason why I sew as RTW that fits was hard to find, especially during the tween years.
My tried and true method of making sure a t-shirt neckband is going to fit is to pull it on over my own head. Obviously it…[Read more]

Might be too stiff for collars… What do others think?

Wonderful! Thanks so much for your input! I was making this more difficult than it should be by thinking I would add length to the back bodice. It makes much more sense to cut and spread the pattern below the arm hole.
Thanks, too, for the tip about topstitching. I wouldn’t have thought of that, but I have been a little stressed about those…[Read more]

I went and specked out your recommendations. The SF101 is great. I ordered a bolt since I can use it both for projects and for collars etc.
I happily ordered online with a 60% coupon from JoAnn’s, so I got a good deal and it will last a long long time… fingers crossed.

meleliza replied to the topic add length to the vest? in the forum oliver + s: art museum 11 years ago
Thanks, these are all good points. He is long everywhere, but more so in the legs than torso. He looks like a racehorse running across the soccer field! Upper body clothes seem to last much longer than pants, so hopefully 2″ will not spoil the vest and also last him a couple years. I started cutting it to work on over the holiday weekend, but got…[Read more]

Yes, I would add a little length to the yoke as well as plenty of length at the hem. You should add the same length to the back yoke as the front. However, be careful to do this below the arm hole so you don’t interfere with how this fits. I think if you measure down say 1/2″ from the bottom of the armholes on the front and back pieces, draw a…[Read more]

So, my Ava is 12 (nearly 13, boo hoo!) and a bit tall for this pattern. Initially, I thought I would just lengthen the hemline about 3″, however, the more I looked at pictures and the drawings the more I think it might look a little out of proportion on her.
She is long and lean. She is so lean that it makes her look taller than she is. She is…[Read more]
