I finished the dress, again sort of fudging in the sleeves. I found that if I lined up the underarm seam and ignored all other match points and did not tug on the easing threads at all, it was just large enough to fit. But I don’t really like the way it looks. For one thing, I’d like a little more of a cap to the sleeve — not gathers, just a bit…[Read more]

If time is of the essence, I would consider the cinema dress. You won’t have to draft significant alterations and the princess seams allow you to fit it right on the body and get away with skipping the muslin. I don’t see why you couldn’t substitute a zipper for the buttons, would would be quicker too. You could also skip the pockets. It has the…[Read more]

I would do a muslin like stated above just so that you can get the fit and the skirt correct. You certainly don’t want the skirt to be tight all the way down. There is a way to slash and spread without altering the waist – cut up to but not through the seam allowance, but I am trusting you know this already.
Good luck and please show us the end…[Read more]

Believe me, I hesitated before starting a separate post about this. I’m sure it’s operator error, but I can’t figure out what I might be doing wrong!
Earlier I posted in the “Odd placement of notches” topic, which somebody else started. At that time, I wondered if I had matched up the notches incorrectly. The fact is that the sleeve seems too…[Read more]

I knew I came to the right place! Unfortunately I only have until Saturday evening, so I need a PDF pattern. The Attache dress would be perfect though! I’ll try the Bistro and see how it goes. It does need to be wide enough for her to play the cello.

Yes, Fit for Real People is an essential – however, if she doesn’t like to follow directions (is she a middle child?;) ) she will probably find it too much. It’s extremely dense and all the examples are really really dated.
I suggest the Colette handbook. I think it has enough detail to take you from beginner to intermediate, but it’s not too…[Read more]

I’m concerned that a floor length Bistro dress wouldn’t give her enough room to walk/play. You couldn’t simply lengthen it, you would have to alter the shape of the skirt by slashing and spreading it. I agree that the attache dress would be more appropriate for concert wear. It’s also extremely easy to fit and sew because of the princess seams.…[Read more]

If it is anything like the matching Cinema Dress there is tons of ease in the waist.

Oooh, looking at the size chart you may be pushing it… but since you already have it cut, I would chance it.
Maybe do a narrower side seam? -

Hi Audrey
I can’t see why the Bistro dress couldn’t be lengthened. I suggest making a muslin first to see how it would go.
As an alternative, and if you have the pattern, you could also use the attache dress. This may achieve more of a flowing look to the skirt (as per you linked photo).
Either pattern would be perfect. What is the time length…[Read more]

Thankyou dubhels2003, you are kind. But I admit I am having an absolute ball sewing them all. Who doesn’t love sewing baby things?
I think we are getting there with the stain removal! White vinegar is magic stuff! I just can’t understand why it went like that though because I did a test on a piece if that fabric and everything. It came out of the…[Read more]
