Rosie started the topic Adjustable elastic on pants? in the forum oliver + s: sailboat 10 years ago
I am almost finished a pair of sailboats for my daughter, had anyone done adjustable elastic? Was thinking of making the elastic section like a tunnel and sewing buttons on one of the front flap bits? Also is the seam for the rise not finished? Not sure if I am doing too much scanning of the instruction but I have made a couple of pairs of O+S…[Read more]

I’ve been looking for notchers like that but have had trouble finding any in my part of the world. Maybe it’s an issue of translation – I have no idea what they would be called in Swedish.
If O+S were to carry them I would pick up a pair in no time!

So, I have gotten around the marking issue by using pins on crucial spots and avoiding really mark-heavy patterns. But I want to make some more complex clothes and marks are inevitable.
I know there are tons of tools, and I have some — white pencil, yellow Chaco liner, purple disappearing ink pen–but how does one actually manage to do the…[Read more]

Bees at a spelling bee sounds so cute!
I’ve traced off Jalie 3244, footie pj’s, and a hood from Ottobre. I’m making it in red and black coral fleece, super cozy 🙂 -

Fiber Club! 10 years agoFor best results, make your swatch about 6″ square. This allows you to measure out a 4″ square to count your rows and stitches more effectively. The reason for not just making a 4″ square swatch is that the edges will be uneven, making it difficult to count precisely. Even being a few stitches out can affect the finished size of your garment. For…[Read more]

If you do start to carry shears, consider the 8.5in Ginghers with a tiny serrated edge for cutting slippery fabrics. They are magic. Another tool I love is a white goat-leather thimble that I think I got from Purl. By far the best thimble I’ve ever had, and I do quite a bit of hand quilting.

Fiber Club! 10 years agoSarvi- how big of a swatch do you make? Thanks to all of your lovely BT inspiration, I am about to start a Brooklyn Tweed project(Bernice Pullover)and I am a little nervous! I want it to go well! I have been swatching and blocking my swatches lately, but I never make them very big.

The two pieces of interfacing are for the crotch snap placket on the bodysuit only, not for the neck placket. I haven’t looked at the errata to see if/how the directions were edited to fix the confusion, but that’s what it’s intended for – those snaps see a lot more wear & tear due to diaper changes, crawling, etc and need to be reinforced.
Hope…[Read more]

Thanks to everyone who replied. Looks like I’m going to bite the bullet and use a zipper. Meleliza, since the dress is going to have an organdy overlay, I’m leaning toward taking your advice and use a hand picked zipper. Keep your fingers crossed!

How does that notcher work, I wonder. But I’d use it. I hate notch cutting.
Nice glass head pins. If you’ve ever melted the plastic heads on your fabric when ironing, you quickly learn the value of glass head.
I once bought Dritz glass head pins with white heads. I was using them in a class and was told never to buy them because they were…[Read more]
