Average rating: (4.3 of 5) based on 52 reviewsCinema DressDidn't fit the way I was hoping. I generally only buy Liesl +Co patterns that offer bust cup size options. This one did not have that option. I would buy the pattern again if it was offered with cop options because the style is really cute. Was this helpful?First Cinema DressI am part way through making the dress, the first Oliver+s pattern I have tried. And I have just been a bit stretched by other commitments to finish it. I had some chambray fabric that I felt was too shiny for my liking so could use as a toile, but since using it on this pattern, I have warmed to it. So far, the pattern is working well with good, clear instructions. I decided to pleat rather than gather the yoke/waist to the skirt for simplicity and neatness. Buying this patterns prompted me to buy a few more.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Great dressI’m a UK size 10 with a large bust. I made the 6 in a Liberty Varuna wool without altering the bust and it fits really well, and was easy to make. No issues with the armhole fit. Next time I’ll take out some of the fullness in the back and front skirts since they’re a bit more gathered than I like. As it’s a winter dress I made the neckline slightly higher and didn’t do the V. It cost me a lot to have the pattern printed by a local print shop, so I’ll make sure I use it again. It would be good in a lightweight linen.6 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? My Cinema Dress storyuI printed out the pattern, made the adjustments for my size 16 with a 42 bust size and made the dress out of cotton with a linen ‘look’. The instructions for the adjustments were a bit difficult to achieve and the fit is ‘ok’ but could be better since I am long waisted. A suggestion for the pattern maker might be to offer the pattern with 2 possible printouts...one for sizes 6-12 and another for 14 and up sizes...which would be less adjustment in the actual pattern pieces for us taller, bigger girls. I did not want to do buttons so I inserted a zipper instead which has worked out just fine...easier to do than buttons and sometimes buttonholes look ‘home made’. Overall, the instructions are quite clear except for the bust adjustment which I had to read over numerous times. The diagrams are very useful and there was a lot of attention to detail and excellent helpful suggestions to ensure reasonable success with this project. Pretty dress...I too have been dressmaking for 50+ years but I don’t know if I would make it again.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema dressI found the instructions to adjust the bust size confusing and looked for a Youtube video which made it a bit clearer but it took me a long time to get it right. I used my measurements, but the dress is tight and not particularly flattering. I made it in a mid-weight linen and it does not fit right at the back. I will wear it around the house, but I'm disappointed in it overall. By the way, I have been making clothing for over 50 years, so I'm not new to sewing.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Beautiful NecklineI've made one garment from this pattern out of a washed cotton. It's too light for me to wear now in winter, but I look forward to wearing it in the spring. It fits beautifully -no tugging anywhere. I tried some embroidery on the front panel to add some interest to my dull fabric. I am hoping to make a corduroy version of this dress for winter wear.4 of 4 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Best dress EVERI am in love with this design. I have made five dresses since I bought the pattern a month ago. I get so many comments on how lovely the style is and each dress is a little different. Perfect sizing as well.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Andrea LeeSeveral years ago I made this dress and find myself tempted to try it again (with modifications). I agree with others: this is an odd fitting dress. The armholes are tight, the back is restrictive and the sleeves are narrow up at shoulders and bind when reaching. The bust fits fine and love everything else about it including very good directions. It was my first PDF experience and all went well. Just a warning that you may want to make the next size larger at least in the back panels and the sleeve openings. Good luck as its a beauty.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Perfect for my tall tweenI was so happy to see this pattern matched the Oliver & S Hide and Seek dress! I have four girls ranging in age from 2-12 and they ask me every Easter to make them matching dresses. I fully expected my oldest to grow out of this request, but she hasn’t. This pattern saved the day! I was amazed at how beautiful, yet simple it was to make. I’ve already made eight versions between my four girls and we love every one. I always know I can depend on Leisl’s patterns every Easter!3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema dressLove this dress!! After reading comments about arm hole positioning was a little nervous, so made a toile first. It fit beautifully! Made an autumn version (colours and sleeve length), looking forward to making some pretty spring ones!!2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?cinema dress - i love itmy new favourite summer dress! i used some linen/rayon blend that had been sitting in my stash for ages. i just added a center seam and a 8" zip to the back skirt. Was this helpful?Just the pattern I was looking for!Haven’t had time to make the dress yet but have been looking for a pattern like this one for ages. Finally found it.Was this helpful? So Sad and Disappointed!Once finished this beautiful dress was flattering and looked like a perfect fit in the mirror, but the armscyes and sleeves were strangely cut and I couldn't move my arms. After I finished the dress I ended up taking it (and the pattern) to a pattern-making teacher for a consult on how to alter both dress and pattern to make it wearable. (I *really* wanted to make this dress work!) I paid $40 for an hour for her expertise (decades of pattern drafting in the fashion industry and teaching college-level pattern drafting to fashion students). I remade the bodice twice before I gave up and bias-bound the armscyes for a wearable sleeveless dress that I don't really want. Also, the dress is somewhat difficult to put on and REALLY difficult take off, even with the back unbuttoned, and the pocket placement over the crotch is awkward. In all fairness, this was a really fun make and the instructions were beautifully written and very clear. The long layout of this pattern wastes a LOT of fabric, which makes it very expensive considering the actual dress measurements. I spent $80 on fabric, $15 on the pattern, and $40 on alteration consulting= $130 for a dress I'm not crazy in love with. OUCH! I have been sewing for 50 years. Some projects you just have to write off and this was one of those losses. "Cinema Dress" is good for rich movie stars who will only pose in it without raising their arms, but this dress is NOT recommended for action heroines on a budget.28 of 29 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Great dressI found the pattern easy well laid out and easy to follow. I went by body measurements to get the pattern size needed as UK sizes are different from US, so it fitted fine. I was fortunate that I didn't need to make bust adjustments. Made it slightly longer - closer to ankle than knee - in a needlecord fabric. Looks really nice! I'm very pleased with the pattern.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?FittingDid all my messurements aspecialy the bust messurements, very carefull. Aftrr finishing it was to small! I did alterrations and I can wear it but not realy comfortabel. Because I love the dress my next one will be a bigger size.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?DisappointedFollowed the directions to the letter. After all that work, the dress didn't fit me... was too small.10 of 10 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Lovely dressThe pattern arrived promptly. I did a toile first as I found altering the top for a D cup confusing. In the end I didn't need to alter the pattern. Otherwise the instructions were very clear to follow. I love the style of this dress, and will make another one probably with short sleeves. Was this helpful?Perfect dressThe Cinema Dress is a relaxed-fit dress, comfortable but still feminine and with some aspects that make it very special and perfect for learn new sewing techniques. Making a Liesl pattern never disappoints, since you know that it’s something different from the rest of the patterns that can be seen through the social media. Their patterns have personality and are made with intelligence and great detail.6 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema Star!!Great pattern, I have made it 3 times already as I plan to visit Europe next week and I needed cotton dresses . The fit is good and was very easy to sew. I intend making further amendments to sleeve and front/back yokes in my next constructions7 of 9 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?great dressGreat pattern, easy to sew and wears like a comfortable dream. Choose light fabric and this can as easily be a stylish as an informal dress. Love the pockets in the seam line!9 of 9 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Sweet dressI love it. It's more flattering than I expected. Did the FBA and ran an ease thread down the seamline to deal with a bit too much fullness, moved the buttons to the front. I'll be making more but I'm thinking about doing a cut-in sleeve or else a fuller one.8 of 8 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema DressI love my finished product but struggled with the yoke and side panel construction. I followed the directions for enlarging the bust to a D cup but once that was done, the yoke just couldn't stretch far enough to fit. Next time (and I will make it again!) I will work out that fit issue with a pattern adjustment. Otherwise, it's a really wonderful dress.6 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? It's love!I recently bought this pattern to make a short sleeved, knee length summer version. I found the PDF a little confusing to put together at first but once I realised some of the parts are flipped upside down to save paper I thought it was genius! I love and wear my short sleeved, knee length version of this in linen all the time. I've since made a sleeveless midi version in rayon for the Australian summer and it's love too. Be warned that this pattern runs very large. I sized down, cut the back yoke piece on the fold at the notch and it's still roomy enough to slip over my head. The side panels meet up perfectly with the yoke and gathered skirt piece in the most magic way so it's drafted really well. I have another version planned in a striped linen too. Highly recommend!19 of 19 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?pattern purchasesI purchased two patterns and am trilled by the speed of delivery of my items. The patterns were very explicit and easy to follow. I saw your company on Pinterest and the Cinema dress was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema dressGreat service—patterns arrived quickly, elegantly packaged. I'm anxious to get started on this dress.2 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Excited for Summer! My pattern arrived a few days ago but both my daughters have put in a request for this dress and I have just purchased some gorgeous linen that I think will work a treat with this style. I think the shorter version will work better for all of us. Can't wait to get these made up.2 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Digital Cinema DressOur 16 year old daughter made this dress for a 4-H clothing project. She printed the pattern, put it together and made it on her own, without my help. She is an advanced sewer, and commented that she liked the instructions given, which were helpful for her. The dress was made of Kaufman Essex Linen Blend Yarn Dyed Olive and turned out lovely. I will be wearing the dress and it fits me well. The dress was judged recently at our county fair and received a blue ribbon and is going to our state fair.15 of 16 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Beautiful, comfortable dressI made this dress in blue/white seersucker for the summer. I've only made one of these bodices before. They are a bit tricky, but mine worked out fine. The pattern was true to size. I plan on making another for the fall.12 of 12 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema DressThis dress was the answer to my need for a blank canvas to place a Costa Rican reverse applique I received after donating $ for a start-up school hot lunch program. The lightweight chambray reads as a solid so the Mola art really pops. Gray antique Pearl buttons close the back bodice. I'm wearing my Mola dress for Christmas!7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Amazing Fit! Love it.I LOVE this dress pattern! Just love it! I never spend this much on a single pattern, but it is a style I have looked at many times and so took the leap. I have to admit feeling some dismay when I opened the .pdf and it was 75 pages long. That is a lot of printer paper and ink! I had to baby my printer through the printing process. I always try out new patterns using inexpensive fabrics from my stash, so I made this dress out of contrasting African-themed cotton prints. I was intrigued with the instructions for adjusting the pattern for a full bust, so I spent some time and effort working on that. I am tall with narrow shoulders and hips, but a full bust and this pattern ended up fitting me just perfectly! I ALWAYS have problems fitting those areas, but I finally have a dress pattern that fits amazingly well. The only further adjustment I will make is to add 1" somewhere across the back to give a bit more ease between the shoulder blades. The back bodice fits perfectly when I am standing still, but if I move my arms, there is some pull across the upper back. I also shortened the sleeves by the width of the cuff. I wear my test dress all the time and get excited thinking about all the possibilities for the next ones I will make.22 of 22 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema dress patternI made the cinema dress in a pretty yellow cotton. It was coming together so well that I could not stop. I stayed up all night to finish.. Had no problems with the pattern. Fit was perfect, size 8.
There were some instructions that I never done before but I took my time and got it right. I wore it to a family get together and everyone loved. It is hard to find a dress for a women my age. This dress was perfect. I can't wait to made another.14 of 14 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Just my style!Made this dress for an afternoon tea party I had been invited to. Made the dress in two days! Loved the quirky style - I am not into tight fitting shift dresses! For me, the fit was great BUT I should have listened to the advice on the pattern instructions and altered the pattern for a fuller bust fit. I am going to do this when I next make the dress. I am going to make several for next summer. (Although it would look great with a fine top underneath for the cooler weather). I was a bit wary about paying extra for the UK postage....but I would definitely do again, it is a different look to the patterns available here.12 of 12 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love!I bought the printed version of this pattern. The envelope is a nice card stock weight, and the whole thing is very well designed. The pattern went together quickly and easily. I read another review that stated the sewist found the construction "fiddly and tedious". I didn't think so at all. I used a very pretty plum colored linen and I did fancy embroidering along the neckline and the hem and it is super cute! So comfy, I will definitely make this pattern again.9 of 9 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love this patternI bought this pattern because I fell in love with the little girl's version (don't have my own little girl) and thought it would be fun trying different things with the yoke. I have made a tunic version, knee length dress, and a long dress and I love them all. I was worried about the fit because the dress looks a little big on the model, and I thought the yoke would look better hitting a little higher. I think I just lucked out though, because the straight 8 fits great. I have used quilting cotton, chambray, and linen with great results. I shortened the sleeves twice (I wear a lot of cardigans that fit quite poorly over a 3/4 sleeve), and the last one I made sleeveless using a tutorial on the blog. I see myself making one every year, kind of like my portfolio pattern ;)16 of 16 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? Not my favoriteI wanted to love this dress, I really did--I usually love Liesl's patterns. But there were so many pieces to cut; the construction was fiddly, tedious, and seemed to take forever. Then, when the dress was (finally!) finished, well...meh. The hem hit at that really unflattering place, where instead of breezy and casual it just looks dowdy. The waist seemed tight, even though the finished size in the instructions gave me plenty of room. I don't think I'll be making this dress again. Incidentally, I bought the Cappuccino dress pattern at the same time, and I've already made three of them!9 of 10 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Heartbroken and DisappointedThis pattern runs small. The back seam is too straight not allowing for soft curve of back, shoulder is too narrow to allow ease of movement in sleeve causing it to tug and strain a bit. The directions were very well done complete with helpful modification hints. But, with all the need for so many modifications I felt the pattern let me down.17 of 19 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Muslin in process-some questionsI will write a full review when I work out my usual fitting issues in the nylon I am making! Thanks for the tip about the low armhole and the sleeves. I have a question- on the pattern photo it looks as though the bottom of the yoke hits the model 's waistline exactly, and I was wondering if that is how it is supposed to fit? The drawing looks to be a little higher. Thanks- Carolyn2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema Dress ReviewThis was my first lies + co or oliver +s pattern to sew and it was a dream. I sewed the Cinema Dress, made it tunic length, shortened the sleeve just a tad and even accomplished the Full Bust Adjustment. I couldn't be happier. I've received a lot of complements for it, too. Some, gushing. I followed the blog Sew-along, though I found that the pattern was not lacking in any way. I've described it as being a sewing lesson in a pattern. Fantastic. I will be buying more. Thank you so much! Here's a pic of the finished product. https://www.flickr.com/photos/103447714@N07/16338070672/3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Flattering Shape and Great InstructionsI would love to give this pattern 5 stars. This was the first time I've done a FBA and as per Liesl, the instructions were super clear. I love the classic style with great details like notched yoke, pockets, button downed back, cuffed sleeve, and two hemline options that can be switched up for many looks from one pattern. Much like the Everyday skirt, there is gathering in the front and back panels to cover problem areas but the sides are smooth which keeps the garment from looking tent-like. I made 2 dresses so far and have yet to resolve the straight jacket-like fit in the sleeves in an otherwise roomy and comfortable dress. The armsye is too low and the sleeve is too narrow. Once I get the sleeve alterations figured out, this will be my new go to pattern.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love this patternLiesl designs beautiful clothing! The fit is perfect, the instrucitons clear and precise. I made this dress up in three different fabrics and all held up in a recent trip to Paris. This pattern is a great investment.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema DressVery happy with the outcome of the dress. I am size 0 with a small frame, one wider shoulder and lower than the other. I have used so many other patterns over the years, and this is a first time where I haven't had to alter the pattern at all. The dress fits beautifully!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Happy daysLoved making this dress, made a short one in green fine courderoy and then a knee length one in an orange fine courderoy. Just be aware to match up the nap of the fabric if using courderoy. On the whole easy to use pattern, far superior to any of the shop, bought patterns like Burda. Sizes were a bit odd, but I just went by the measurements not the sizes. I enjoyed making it, my first experience of Oliver and S patterns. I have already bought two more. I think this style will be a staple in my wardrobe, looks nice really short, like a long shirt. X2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?looks lovely until you want to raise your armsI love the look of this dress, and the pockets are fabulous. Construction is pretty straightforward, and the directions are good. However, the sleeves are set at too low an angle; raising my arms high enough to put my hands on my hips pulls the entire shoulder and upper chest area taut. It's not actually difficult to move my arms, but I don't think a dress this loose should make you *notice* when you're doing it, or have wrinkles across the upper arms after half a day's wear. Next time I make this I'll probably modify the sleeve pattern to prioritize motion in the dress over a perfectly straight underarm seam.15 of 15 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?A very professional patternThis is by far one of the best patterns I've ever used. Every single step is clearly explained; the pattern is well marked with darts, dots and notches that seem to match up better than most patterns. My favorite part was actually the method used to expand the dress for a larger bustline. I hadn't seen that done before and believe me, it's a technique I will use in the future. Both the pattern and style of dress are hightly recommended.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?love itThis dress came together so easy. It is great to wear. I have had lots of flattering comments. I made it in a cheap plain green to see how it fit and made it again for my sixteen year old daughter in 6 different patchwork fabrics, it looks fabulous. Recommend this pattern highly1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema Dress - digital patternSuch a joy to use this pattern. I made it for my adult daughter - she and her husband are assigned out of country to an Embassy - she needs tasteful but fashionable clothes for the many events they attend. This pattern was perfect - I enjoyed making the dress - used a dark green silk - the pattern was easy to follow and accurate. I plan to use it again in the spring to make a more casual dress.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?delayedI love the pattern. I finally found two pieces of fabric to use and cut out one. Then other projects preempted my personal sewing time. I hope to get back to it soon. My first fabric is very light and I will be lining it with a very light fabric, except for the sleeves. Was this helpful?Cinema DressI made this dress using a blue linen with an embroidered pattern on it. It turned out beautifully, and I got a lot of compliments. I really like the loose, comfortable fit.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?
