I am part way through making the dress, the first Oliver+s pattern I have tried. And I have just been a bit stretched by other commitments to finish it. I had some chambray fabric that I felt was too shiny for my liking so could use as a toile, but since using it on this pattern, I have warmed to it. So far, the pattern is working well with good, clear instructions. I decided to pleat rather than gather the yoke/waist to the skirt for simplicity and neatness. Buying this patterns prompted me to buy a few more.

      Great dress

I’m a UK size 10 with a large bust. I made the 6 in a Liberty Varuna wool without altering the bust and it fits really well, and was easy to make. No issues with the armhole fit. Next time I’ll take out some of the fullness in the back and front skirts since they’re a bit more gathered than I like. As it’s a winter dress I made the neckline slightly higher and didn’t do the V. It cost me a lot to have the pattern printed by a local print shop, so I’ll make sure I use it again. It would be good in a lightweight linen.

      My Cinema Dress storyu
Reviewed by Sandy Osborn ( Verified Buyer) on 03/18/2021
I printed out the pattern, made the adjustments for my size 16 with a 42 bust size and made the dress out of cotton with a linen ‘look’. The instructions for the adjustments were a bit difficult to achieve and the fit is ‘ok’ but could be better since I am long waisted. A suggestion for the pattern maker might be to offer the pattern with 2 possible printouts...one for sizes 6-12 and another for 14 and up sizes...which would be less adjustment in the actual pattern pieces for us taller, bigger girls. I did not want to do buttons so I inserted a zipper instead which has worked out just fine...easier to do than buttons and sometimes buttonholes look ‘home made’. Overall, the instructions are quite clear except for the bust adjustment which I had to read over numerous times. The diagrams are very useful and there was a lot of attention to detail and excellent helpful suggestions to ensure reasonable success with this project. Pretty dress...I too have been dressmaking for 50+ years but I don’t know if I would make it again.

I found the instructions to adjust the bust size confusing and looked for a Youtube video which made it a bit clearer but it took me a long time to get it right. I used my measurements, but the dress is tight and not particularly flattering. I made it in a mid-weight linen and it does not fit right at the back. I will wear it around the house, but I'm disappointed in it overall. By the way, I have been making clothing for over 50 years, so I'm not new to sewing.

I've made one garment from this pattern out of a washed cotton. It's too light for me to wear now in winter, but I look forward to wearing it in the spring. It fits beautifully -no tugging anywhere. I tried some embroidery on the front panel to add some interest to my dull fabric. I am hoping to make a corduroy version of this dress for winter wear.

Several years ago I made this dress and find myself tempted to try it again (with modifications). I agree with others: this is an odd fitting dress. The armholes are tight, the back is restrictive and the sleeves are narrow up at shoulders and bind when reaching. The bust fits fine and love everything else about it including very good directions. It was my first PDF experience and all went well. Just a warning that you may want to make the next size larger at least in the back panels and the sleeve openings. Good luck as its a beauty.

I was so happy to see this pattern matched the Oliver & S Hide and Seek dress! I have four girls ranging in age from 2-12 and they ask me every Easter to make them matching dresses. I fully expected my oldest to grow out of this request, but she hasn’t. This pattern saved the day! I was amazed at how beautiful, yet simple it was to make. I’ve already made eight versions between my four girls and we love every one. I always know I can depend on Leisl’s patterns every Easter!

      So Sad and Disappointed!
    Reviewed by Janet on 10/29/2018
Once finished this beautiful dress was flattering and looked like a perfect fit in the mirror, but the armscyes and sleeves were strangely cut and I couldn't move my arms. After I finished the dress I ended up taking it (and the pattern) to a pattern-making teacher for a consult on how to alter both dress and pattern to make it wearable. (I *really* wanted to make this dress work!) I paid $40 for an hour for her expertise (decades of pattern drafting in the fashion industry and teaching college-level pattern drafting to fashion students). I remade the bodice twice before I gave up and bias-bound the armscyes for a wearable sleeveless dress that I don't really want. Also, the dress is somewhat difficult to put on and REALLY difficult take off, even with the back unbuttoned, and the pocket placement over the crotch is awkward. In all fairness, this was a really fun make and the instructions were beautifully written and very clear. The long layout of this pattern wastes a LOT of fabric, which makes it very expensive considering the actual dress measurements. I spent $80 on fabric, $15 on the pattern, and $40 on alteration consulting= $130 for a dress I'm not crazy in love with. OUCH! I have been sewing for 50 years. Some projects you just have to write off and this was one of those losses. "Cinema Dress" is good for rich movie stars who will only pose in it without raising their arms, but this dress is NOT recommended for action heroines on a budget.

I was fortunate that I didn't need to make bust adjustments. Made it slightly longer - closer to ankle than knee - in a needlecord fabric. Looks really nice! I'm very pleased with the pattern.

I recently bought this pattern to make a short sleeved, knee length summer version. I found the PDF a little confusing to put together at first but once I realised some of the parts are flipped upside down to save paper I thought it was genius! I love and wear my short sleeved, knee length version of this in linen all the time. I've since made a sleeveless midi version in rayon for the Australian summer and it's love too. Be warned that this pattern runs very large. I sized down, cut the back yoke piece on the fold at the notch and it's still roomy enough to slip over my head. The side panels meet up perfectly with the yoke and gathered skirt piece in the most magic way so it's drafted really well. I have another version planned in a striped linen too. Highly recommend!

I LOVE this dress pattern! Just love it! I never spend this much on a single pattern, but it is a style I have looked at many times and so took the leap. I have to admit feeling some dismay when I opened the .pdf and it was 75 pages long. That is a lot of printer paper and ink! I had to baby my printer through the printing process. I always try out new patterns using inexpensive fabrics from my stash, so I made this dress out of contrasting African-themed cotton prints. I was intrigued with the instructions for adjusting the pattern for a full bust, so I spent some time and effort working on that. I am tall with narrow shoulders and hips, but a full bust and this pattern ended up fitting me just perfectly! I ALWAYS have problems fitting those areas, but I finally have a dress pattern that fits amazingly well. The only further adjustment I will make is to add 1" somewhere across the back to give a bit more ease between the shoulder blades. The back bodice fits perfectly when I am standing still, but if I move my arms, there is some pull across the upper back. I also shortened the sleeves by the width of the cuff. I wear my test dress all the time and get excited thinking about all the possibilities for the next ones I will make.

I bought this pattern because I fell in love with the little girl's version (don't have my own little girl) and thought it would be fun trying different things with the yoke. I have made a tunic version, knee length dress, and a long dress and I love them all. I was worried about the fit because the dress looks a little big on the model, and I thought the yoke would look better hitting a little higher. I think I just lucked out though, because the straight 8 fits great. I have used quilting cotton, chambray, and linen with great results. I shortened the sleeves twice (I wear a lot of cardigans that fit quite poorly over a 3/4 sleeve), and the last one I made sleeveless using a tutorial on the blog. I see myself making one every year, kind of like my portfolio pattern ;)

I wanted to love this dress, I really did--I usually love Liesl's patterns. But there were so many pieces to cut; the construction was fiddly, tedious, and seemed to take forever. Then, when the dress was (finally!) finished, well...meh. The hem hit at that really unflattering place, where instead of breezy and casual it just looks dowdy. The waist seemed tight, even though the finished size in the instructions gave me plenty of room. I don't think I'll be making this dress again. Incidentally, I bought the Cappuccino dress pattern at the same time, and I've already made three of them!

      Flattering Shape and Great Instructions
Reviewed by Jill S. on 02/08/2015
I would love to give this pattern 5 stars. This was the first time I've done a FBA and as per Liesl, the instructions were super clear. I love the classic style with great details like notched yoke, pockets, button downed back, cuffed sleeve, and two hemline options that can be switched up for many looks from one pattern. Much like the Everyday skirt, there is gathering in the front and back panels to cover problem areas but the sides are smooth which keeps the garment from looking tent-like. I made 2 dresses so far and have yet to resolve the straight jacket-like fit in the sleeves in an otherwise roomy and comfortable dress. The armsye is too low and the sleeve is too narrow. Once I get the sleeve alterations figured out, this will be my new go to pattern.

Liesl designs beautiful clothing! The fit is perfect, the instrucitons clear and precise. I made this dress up in three different fabrics and all held up in a recent trip to Paris. This pattern is a great investment.

Very happy with the outcome of the dress. I am size 0 with a small frame, one wider shoulder and lower than the other. I have used so many other patterns over the years, and this is a first time where I haven't had to alter the pattern at all. The dress fits beautifully!

      Happy days

Loved making this dress, made a short one in green fine courderoy and then a knee length one in an orange fine courderoy. Just be aware to match up the nap of the fabric if using courderoy. On the whole easy to use pattern, far superior to any of the shop, bought patterns like Burda. Sizes were a bit odd, but I just went by the measurements not the sizes. I enjoyed making it, my first experience of Oliver and S patterns. I have already bought two more. I think this style will be a staple in my wardrobe, looks nice really short, like a long shirt. X

looks lovely until you want to raise your arms
Reviewed by Ann B. on 11/30/2014
I love the look of this dress, and the pockets are fabulous. Construction is pretty straightforward, and the directions are good. However, the sleeves are set at too low an angle; raising my arms high enough to put my hands on my hips pulls the entire shoulder and upper chest area taut. It's not actually difficult to move my arms, but I don't think a dress this loose should make you *notice* when you're doing it, or have wrinkles across the upper arms after half a day's wear. Next time I make this I'll probably modify the sleeve pattern to prioritize motion in the dress over a perfectly straight underarm seam.

      A very professional pattern

This is by far one of the best patterns I've ever used. Every single step is clearly explained; the pattern is well marked with darts, dots and notches that seem to match up better than most patterns. My favorite part was actually the method used to expand the dress for a larger bustline. I hadn't seen that done before and believe me, it's a technique I will use in the future. Both the pattern and style of dress are hightly recommended.

This dress came together so easy. It is great to wear. I have had lots of flattering comments. I made it in a cheap plain green to see how it fit and made it again for my sixteen year old daughter in 6 different patchwork fabrics, it looks fabulous. Recommend this pattern highly

      Cinema Dress - digital pattern

Such a joy to use this pattern. I made it for my adult daughter - she and her husband are assigned out of country to an Embassy - she needs tasteful but fashionable clothes for the many events they attend. This pattern was perfect - I enjoyed making the dress - used a dark green silk - the pattern was easy to follow and accurate. I plan to use it again in the spring to make a more casual dress.

I love the pattern. I finally found two pieces of fabric to use and cut out one. Then other projects preempted my personal sewing time. I hope to get back to it soon. My first fabric is very light and I will be lining it with a very light fabric, except for the sleeves.

I made this dress using a blue linen with an embroidered pattern on it. It turned out beautifully, and I got a lot of compliments. I really like the loose, comfortable fit.
