Average rating: (4.7 of 5) based on 24 reviewsCinema dressReviewed by Barbara Smith (Verified Buyer) on 08/21/2016Great service—patterns arrived quickly, elegantly packaged. I'm anxious to get started on this dress. Was this helpful?Excited for Summer!Reviewed by Andrea Vaughan (Verified Buyer) on 08/07/2016My pattern arrived a few days ago but both my daughters have put in a request for this dress and I have just purchased some gorgeous linen that I think will work a treat with this style. I think the shorter version will work better for all of us. Can't wait to get these made up.Was this helpful?Digital Cinema DressReviewed by Kim Morrison (Verified Buyer) on 07/23/2016Our 16 year old daughter made this dress for a 4-H clothing project. She printed the pattern, put it together and made it on her own, without my help. She is an advanced sewer, and commented that she liked the instructions given, which were helpful for her. The dress was made of Kaufman Essex Linen Blend Yarn Dyed Olive and turned out lovely. I will be wearing the dress and it fits me well. The dress was judged recently at our county fair and received a blue ribbon and is going to our state fair.4 of 4 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Beautiful, comfortable dressReviewed by Jane Mika (Verified Buyer) on 06/03/2016I made this dress in blue/white seersucker for the summer. I've only made one of these bodices before. They are a bit tricky, but mine worked out fine. The pattern was true to size. I plan on making another for the fall.5 of 5 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema DressReviewed by Mary Ann Wilson (Verified Buyer) on 12/19/2015This dress was the answer to my need for a blank canvas to place a Costa Rican reverse applique I received after donating $ for a start-up school hot lunch program. The lightweight chambray reads as a solid so the Mola art really pops. Gray antique Pearl buttons close the back bodice. I'm wearing my Mola dress for Christmas!3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Amazing Fit! Love it.Reviewed by Katherine (Verified Buyer) on 12/12/2015I LOVE this dress pattern! Just love it! I never spend this much on a single pattern, but it is a style I have looked at many times and so took the leap. I have to admit feeling some dismay when I opened the .pdf and it was 75 pages long. That is a lot of printer paper and ink! I had to baby my printer through the printing process. I always try out new patterns using inexpensive fabrics from my stash, so I made this dress out of contrasting African-themed cotton prints. I was intrigued with the instructions for adjusting the pattern for a full bust, so I spent some time and effort working on that. I am tall with narrow shoulders and hips, but a full bust and this pattern ended up fitting me just perfectly! I ALWAYS have problems fitting those areas, but I finally have a dress pattern that fits amazingly well. The only further adjustment I will make is to add 1" somewhere across the back to give a bit more ease between the shoulder blades. The back bodice fits perfectly when I am standing still, but if I move my arms, there is some pull across the upper back. I also shortened the sleeves by the width of the cuff. I wear my test dress all the time and get excited thinking about all the possibilities for the next ones I will make.8 of 8 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema dress patternReviewed by Jeannie myers (Verified Buyer) on 11/01/2015I made the cinema dress in a pretty yellow cotton. It was coming together so well that I could not stop. I stayed up all night to finish.. Had no problems with the pattern. Fit was perfect, size 8.
There were some instructions that I never done before but I took my time and got it right. I wore it to a family get together and everyone loved. It is hard to find a dress for a women my age. This dress was perfect. I can't wait to made another.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Just my style!Reviewed by PamS (Verified Buyer) on 10/28/2015Made this dress for an afternoon tea party I had been invited to. Made the dress in two days! Loved the quirky style - I am not into tight fitting shift dresses! For me, the fit was great BUT I should have listened to the advice on the pattern instructions and altered the pattern for a fuller bust fit. I am going to do this when I next make the dress. I am going to make several for next summer. (Although it would look great with a fine top underneath for the cooler weather). I was a bit wary about paying extra for the UK postage....but I would definitely do again, it is a different look to the patterns available here.6 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love!Reviewed by Diana Andrews (Verified Buyer) on 10/27/2015I bought the printed version of this pattern. The envelope is a nice card stock weight, and the whole thing is very well designed. The pattern went together quickly and easily. I read another review that stated the sewist found the construction "fiddly and tedious". I didn't think so at all. I used a very pretty plum colored linen and I did fancy embroidering along the neckline and the hem and it is super cute! So comfy, I will definitely make this pattern again.4 of 4 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love this patternReviewed by ChicmamainEDH on 07/10/2015I bought this pattern because I fell in love with the little girl's version (don't have my own little girl) and thought it would be fun trying different things with the yoke. I have made a tunic version, knee length dress, and a long dress and I love them all. I was worried about the fit because the dress looks a little big on the model, and I thought the yoke would look better hitting a little higher. I think I just lucked out though, because the straight 8 fits great. I have used quilting cotton, chambray, and linen with great results. I shortened the sleeves twice (I wear a lot of cardigans that fit quite poorly over a 3/4 sleeve), and the last one I made sleeveless using a tutorial on the blog. I see myself making one every year, kind of like my portfolio pattern ;)11 of 11 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? Not my favoriteReviewed by Maili Bradley on 05/11/2015I wanted to love this dress, I really did--I usually love Liesl's patterns. But there were so many pieces to cut; the construction was fiddly, tedious, and seemed to take forever. Then, when the dress was (finally!) finished, well...meh. The hem hit at that really unflattering place, where instead of breezy and casual it just looks dowdy. The waist seemed tight, even though the finished size in the instructions gave me plenty of room. I don't think I'll be making this dress again. Incidentally, I bought the Cappuccino dress pattern at the same time, and I've already made three of them!5 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Heartbroken and DisappointedReviewed by Andrea Lee on 04/04/2015This pattern runs small. The back seam is too straight not allowing for soft curve of back, shoulder is too narrow to allow ease of movement in sleeve causing it to tug and strain a bit. The directions were very well done complete with helpful modification hints. But, with all the need for so many modifications I felt the pattern let me down.6 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Muslin in process-some questionsReviewed by Carolyn D on 03/22/2015I will write a full review when I work out my usual fitting issues in the nylon I am making! Thanks for the tip about the low armhole and the sleeves. I have a question- on the pattern photo it looks as though the bottom of the yoke hits the model 's waistline exactly, and I was wondering if that is how it is supposed to fit? The drawing looks to be a little higher. Thanks- Carolyn1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema Dress ReviewReviewed by Valerie Carey on 02/11/2015This was my first lies + co or oliver +s pattern to sew and it was a dream. I sewed the Cinema Dress, made it tunic length, shortened the sleeve just a tad and even accomplished the Full Bust Adjustment. I couldn't be happier. I've received a lot of complements for it, too. Some, gushing. I followed the blog Sew-along, though I found that the pattern was not lacking in any way. I've described it as being a sewing lesson in a pattern. Fantastic. I will be buying more. Thank you so much! Here's a pic of the finished product. https://www.flickr.com/photos/103447714@N07/16338070672/1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Flattering Shape and Great InstructionsReviewed by Jill S. on 02/08/2015I would love to give this pattern 5 stars. This was the first time I've done a FBA and as per Liesl, the instructions were super clear. I love the classic style with great details like notched yoke, pockets, button downed back, cuffed sleeve, and two hemline options that can be switched up for many looks from one pattern. Much like the Everyday skirt, there is gathering in the front and back panels to cover problem areas but the sides are smooth which keeps the garment from looking tent-like. I made 2 dresses so far and have yet to resolve the straight jacket-like fit in the sleeves in an otherwise roomy and comfortable dress. The armsye is too low and the sleeve is too narrow. Once I get the sleeve alterations figured out, this will be my new go to pattern.4 of 4 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love this patternReviewed by Elizabeth on 01/21/2015Liesl designs beautiful clothing! The fit is perfect, the instrucitons clear and precise. I made this dress up in three different fabrics and all held up in a recent trip to Paris. This pattern is a great investment.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cinema DressReviewed by Linda on 01/13/2015Very happy with the outcome of the dress. I am size 0 with a small frame, one wider shoulder and lower than the other. I have used so many other patterns over the years, and this is a first time where I haven't had to alter the pattern at all. The dress fits beautifully!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Happy daysReviewed by Saskia on 12/27/2014Loved making this dress, made a short one in green fine courderoy and then a knee length one in an orange fine courderoy. Just be aware to match up the nap of the fabric if using courderoy. On the whole easy to use pattern, far superior to any of the shop, bought patterns like Burda. Sizes were a bit odd, but I just went by the measurements not the sizes. I enjoyed making it, my first experience of Oliver and S patterns. I have already bought two more. I think this style will be a staple in my wardrobe, looks nice really short, like a long shirt. XWas this helpful?looks lovely until you want to raise your armsReviewed by Ann B. on 11/30/2014I love the look of this dress, and the pockets are fabulous. Construction is pretty straightforward, and the directions are good. However, the sleeves are set at too low an angle; raising my arms high enough to put my hands on my hips pulls the entire shoulder and upper chest area taut. It's not actually difficult to move my arms, but I don't think a dress this loose should make you *notice* when you're doing it, or have wrinkles across the upper arms after half a day's wear. Next time I make this I'll probably modify the sleeve pattern to prioritize motion in the dress over a perfectly straight underarm seam.6 of 6 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?A very professional patternReviewed by Karen Ornelas on 11/30/2014This is by far one of the best patterns I've ever used. Every single step is clearly explained; the pattern is well marked with darts, dots and notches that seem to match up better than most patterns. My favorite part was actually the method used to expand the dress for a larger bustline. I hadn't seen that done before and believe me, it's a technique I will use in the future. Both the pattern and style of dress are hightly recommended. Was this helpful?love itReviewed by Sharrone on 11/20/2014This dress came together so easy. It is great to wear. I have had lots of flattering comments. I made it in a cheap plain green to see how it fit and made it again for my sixteen year old daughter in 6 different patchwork fabrics, it looks fabulous. Recommend this pattern highlyWas this helpful?Cinema Dress - digital patternReviewed by Barbara Dawkins on 11/06/2014Such a joy to use this pattern. I made it for my adult daughter - she and her husband are assigned out of country to an Embassy - she needs tasteful but fashionable clothes for the many events they attend. This pattern was perfect - I enjoyed making the dress - used a dark green silk - the pattern was easy to follow and accurate. I plan to use it again in the spring to make a more casual dress. Was this helpful?delayedReviewed by Wanda Quist on 11/04/2014I love the pattern. I finally found two pieces of fabric to use and cut out one. Then other projects preempted my personal sewing time. I hope to get back to it soon. My first fabric is very light and I will be lining it with a very light fabric, except for the sleeves. Was this helpful?Cinema DressReviewed by Angela on 10/30/2014I made this dress using a blue linen with an embroidered pattern on it. It turned out beautifully, and I got a lot of compliments. I really like the loose, comfortable fit.Was this helpful?
