Rubber backed curtain fabric with washers sewn in the hem makes a very effective block out. Often curtain making shops will have remnants.

@kgiff, you will be very popular with the school. I have 27 drawstring bags to sew for the 2/3’s. The teacher wants to sort the skipping ropes.

Have you tried the fold in half, fold in the edges to meet and fold press then topstitch, to make roulette?

Or use a similar colour in a lighter fabric. My hair ties did not work well.

I’m thinking I’m going to give @motherof5 ‘s rota system a try this year – I picked up quite a few Thread Theory patterns during their New Years sale (the wardrobe builder set – Strathcona henley, Jedediah pants, and Newcastle cardigan – and the Camas blouse for me), so together with Liesl’s new patterns, there’s quite a lot of sewing I can now do…[Read more]

I know you can purchase blackout fabric in white or black, and it’s designed to be durable and to really block out the light. If you use that, you could use almost anything on the “surface” (the side that shows) to make it pretty. I’m fairly certain it’s lightweight fabric and easy to work with. Katy I made some Girl Friday culottes, and while I have some fit issues, since they were my first ever pants I’m pretty happy with them after all. 42d here today and high temps expected again tomorrow. We have not been threatened with bush fires but we remain vigilant.
