Heidi, PLEASE post photos of your husband in the footies. Cut his head off if you must but I really, really want to see this!

Just finished a red satin sarafan (traditional Russian pinafore) for my 4-year-old’s Russian school concert in January. I was dreading the task because I had to draft my own pattern and I was a bit scared of the satin, but it ended up being a very pleasant sew. I had a sarafan that my grandmother had made for me years and years ago, so I studied…[Read more]

I finally got my sew-jo back (with a vengeance too) and we are departing in an hour for the airport to go visit the inlaws. No sewing for me for a week! I packed some knitting to keep myself busy but I just got some new knits to make leggings for the girls and I really want to do that!

  • I am terrible about scrap hoarding. Last year I finally ditched all the teeny tiny pieces I was keeping “for applique” – since I do appliqué like twice a year! I cut 4×4″ squares of most of the fabrics that had enough for that thinking that I’d make a doll quilt at some point. I’m trying not to hoard scraps anymore because I just don’t have…[Read more]

  • I pretty much keep everything except teeny weeny scraps and small bits of knit fabric, but that’s going to have stop! In terms of what you can use them for, even if you can’t get a whole o+s pattern out of a piece you can often use the fabric for facings and binding.

I have two sweet jars of really small scraps I can use for quilting, or my…[Read more]

  • I’m sorting my fabric at the moment. I’m trying to work out what size to keep and when to throw!
I made a pouffe last January and any smallish scraps from cutting have been going in there. It’s nearly full, I might need to make another one for this year 🙂
But what are the smallest usable scraps for Oliver and S sewing? What pattern?
    I’m…[Read more]

  • I just got Jalie 3244 (footed onsie pattern)! I’m going to make my husband one, but it has to be an animal, so it will be a panther 🙂 But first I’m making a baby one to check out the construction order and pattern.

  • Hello, I’m wondering if any UK residents have any online shops they can recommend for buying decent plain knits for leggings? I prefer to touch and feel but I can’t buy decent knits where I live, and there’s no chance of going further afield at the mo. I am also after a sweatshirt knit. I’ve bought patterned knit fabrics from various online…[Read more]

  • They’re brilliant, i’m especially loving the cowboy outfit, complete with cowboy stance. Is this the start of an addiction to vintage patterns?

  • Dived into sewing up some vintage patterns this Christmas, and, ohmahlawd. Why did it take me so (sew?) long to do it?!

The plaid dress was made using an Advance (sold at JC Penny’s) pattern from 1938. The cowboy outfit was made using a 1940’s Simplicity pattern, and the frilly PJs were the result of a 1950’s Simplicity pattern.

    The cowboy…[Read more]

Just sent you a message Nicole – it’s yours!

  • @motherof5 the kedgeree looks interesting! I’ve never heard of it before, one of the things I love about this thread. And yes, yams = sweet potatoes (they may be different plants but for all intents and purposes are interchangeable in recipes). I would imagine the sweetness of the yams plays nicely against the sharp salty Gruyere :-).

  • Cybele, that is very exciting to move into your own space 🙂
I sewed up some Christmas bunting yesterday (Boxing Day). I got given a pre printed panel this year.
We’re in the process of swapping over the study and the spare room (where all the sewing stuff (fabric) )is stored. It will be a good opportunity to take stock of what I have!
