Nothing to add to Nicole’s excellent advice, but good luck, I’m sure both the kid and the parents will be delighted to have a special, pretty dress!

I wonder if small hands are an advantage? My BIL used to get me to pull lambs as my hands were smaller.
Have fun shopping, seriously jealous.

@sarvi it is awesome. Jed calibrated it yesterday and we are having a cool snap so it is perfect baking weather.
I need a new kettle now, my old one looks very grungy on the hob.

Great ideas @ann-maree.
How frustrating @rhythmtyagi, it may soften yet or you could try giving it a scrub with a nailbrush and some yellow soap. That may help remove the dressing.

I made these for my baby girl https://www.flickr.com/photos/motherof5/17417326175/in/album-72157649752898567/ ( not O+S, blush) and I pointed the Chevrons downwards even though they were across the grain on the fabric.
I made my older daughter a coat from the same cloth ( I purchased a bolt) and I did the same. Both garments are wearing well with…[Read more]

@AmyF how very kind of you.
If she is only 8 I am wondering of she is only really after width? I have sewn for a obese child and her I found that was he case for her. I think what I would do is too split the front dress panel in half and add a few inches to the that.
I would add the same to the front bands and add quite a bit to the waist one…[Read more]

I’ve hosted a few NYC shopping trips in my time. Would love to do it again someday if there’s enough interest!

Sew Alongs 10 years agoSorry to hear that that seaming went so slowly, @sanitystitches. I pressed mine and then sort of fiddled with the fabric as I sewed, so I didn’t need to baste. But different fabrics may respond differently, too. And your finished coat looks terrific!
@artscience, definitely shorten and the shorten line. Anything else will give you a different…[Read more]

Do you especially want to include a placket, either for looks or ease of dressing? Because otherwise that looks not unlike a Class Picnic top (possibly available on clearance!) with a bit of elastic gathering at the wrist end of the sleeve.

Oh! Of course — my reading comprehension is not so hot before my morning coffee kicks in! 6″ should be plenty and nana can always trim if needed.

Sorry, I guess I’m not clear on the relevance of the grandmother’s size? I’ve made the size 5 and found the elastic to be fine. It is a pretty gentle sort of elastic that fits in there (you’re not meant to use that very stiff, heavy waistband type of elastic) and it’s really just giving a bit of gentle gather/ease for dressing to a bit of the…[Read more]

@lightningmcstitch , I double dare you to wear that!
My new stove arrived and I am on the last stretch of my 18th Birthday sewing. Next week will be baking and list writing.
The Fab Five have done an awesome job clearing and tidying up the yard and old implement shed.
I am getting very excited to catch up with friends and family, it seems like…[Read more]
