Sorry, just realised that Nicole also suggested the Ice Cream dress. I really recommend that pattern, and I’d be happy to help out if you haven’t time/cash to buy pattern.

Other than my suggestion, all the other advice from far more experienced sewists sounds spot on. The Garden Party is good pattern for widening the chest/waist/skirt without distorting the line of the original pattern.

At the risk of being unhelpful, would ‘Mama’ come at the Ice Cream dress for her girl? The pattern is extremely roomy, and it’s likely that the size 12 would give your client plenty of room, and disguise the chest, and tummy. (I do sympathise; altho not terribly overweight at the onset of puberty, I was rather ‘bolster shaped’ for a couple of…[Read more]

Sew Alongs 10 years agoThat sounds like a fantastic solution, @mychurchdoll! I was also thinking that a bias binding could be really pretty and simple for a very thick fabric that won’t cooperate with hemming.

Thank you @shokomoo, you are sweet. We are campaigning Liesl to make a dungarees pattern.
My sewing gal-pal @ock-du-spock tracked down the same pattern in a larger size.It is lovely fabric.

Not to go against @with-love-heidi, she sews for a plethora of lucky children, I would only add to the back if she is really overweight.
Chubby little girls tend to have big tummies, which this dress would disguise well, if you add to the back it may get ‘tenty’ and lose the original look. -

@withloveheidi-
Mash up- must be substantially one or more oliver and s patterns?
So other patterns would be ok.
I mean I have a dress from McCalls with jumprope pockets. That’s not much of and O + s pattern mash up. 🙂
But I am open to group rule!

Just saw the vest Heidi and it looks stunning!
I have laid out my birthday party dress pieces on the remnant of fabric left over from a ballsedup fairy tale dress for Imogen a few years ago. This time the dress will work. I can’t wait as, like the seashore sundresses, it has been dancing around in this noggin for a little while so its time to…[Read more]

Wow! Lots of sewing Heidi. Lucky you for having a four day weekend! I am sewing along with kids clothes week and have so far made two Seashore dresses and bloomers to match. I have some fabric ready to layout with the Birthday party dress on the cutting table which is the next project and after that I hope to have at least one bubble dress made.…[Read more]

Nothing to add to Nicole’s excellent advice, but good luck, I’m sure both the kid and the parents will be delighted to have a special, pretty dress!

I wonder if small hands are an advantage? My BIL used to get me to pull lambs as my hands were smaller.
Have fun shopping, seriously jealous.
